With my second Media Report I decided to address the genre of Rap/Hip Hop. I do not necessarily dislike this genre, because there are some rap songs that I really enjoy, however it is probably a genre that I have struggled to appreciate. However I chose this genre in the hopes of understanding it more. A lot of times when this genre is critiqued people usually dislike it because of it's crude language and it's "talkative" aspect, and in this report I talked about the rap duo known as Run The Jewels which indeed displays these characteristics. I had known of this group and was not really a fan, however after listening to more of their music and seeing where the inspiration for these songs came from, I feel like I have a new respect for them. Rap and Hip Hop in my opinion is a very popular genre amongst the younger demographic, therefore many of the people around my age are fond of this genre. I have also noticed that the youth has become increasingly more interested in political and social issues so it makes sense that groups like Run The Jewels and other well known musicians address these type of social issues in their music. I focused on Run The Jewels and how they refer to instances of discrimination and police brutality in their songs because it is a prevalent issue that they feel strongly about. By delving deeper into this genre through groups that put meaning and purpose in their lyrics I have been able to see this music in a new light. In summation, I have definitely changed my perspective on this genre as a whole and have gained a new appreciation for groups like Run The Jewels. I recognize how these songs that these groups produce are not meant solely for entertainment but to raise awareness to these issues. For those reasons I recognize the fact that they use their status as a means of relaying important messages. Overall groups like Run The Jewels, as well as other Rap artists should be given ample time to be recognized and I too will not be as quick to judge this music as I once was.

"Rap has so many possibilities that need to be explored. There are different factions of rap, but some are in a rut. Rap doesn't have to be about boosting egos and grabbing your crotch and dissing women. There's a way to make political and social issues interesting and entertaining to the young rap audience".

- Michael Franti
(Musician)
