Jay Gould was born in Roxbury, NY on My 27, 1836. During his childhood he was not in a wealthy class. He became a stockbroker and manipulated stocks for his own financial gain and made his first fortune. He became part of the Erie Railroad wars for control of the Erie Railroad, which he ultimately won. In the 1860s he got caught up in a scheme to "corner gold." His plan ultimately failed but he still gained financially from it. His many schemes were absolutely illegal, but he bribed many legislatures to legalize his sale of bonds, and he covered his tracks carefully so he was never caught. He died on December 2, 1892 as a very wealthy man and known as the greatest Robber Baron.
