This themed issue of Performance Philosophy invites contributions that interrogate the entanglements of eco-emotions, climate justice, and performance. We are living in an era defined not only by accelerating climate breakdown but also by the emotional landscapes it produces: grief, anxiety, solastalgia, rage, numbness, and fragile hope. These eco-emotions are not merely private states; they are public, political, and philosophical forces that register the affective dimensions of environmental crisis (Pihkala 2022; Albrecht 2006). They shape how individuals and communities experience climate disruption, how they imagine justice, and how they act—or fail to act—in response.

Performance has become a crucial arena for working through these intensities. Within the remit of performance philosophy, we approach performance not as a means of representing ecological crisis, but as a mode of thinking-in-action. Performance does not merely express climate emotions; it thinks with and through them, generating forms of reflection that exceed purely discursive or analytical frameworks. By staging the ‘unthinkable’ scale of climate change, performance becomes a site of situated inquiry, where affect and collective presence become primary resources for philosophical experimentation.

We ask: How might eco-emotions allow us to think climate change through performance? What relationships emerge between feeling, thinking, and performing when the ‘human’ subject is displaced by multispecies ethics? In what ways does the materiality of performance allow us to think with ecological wounds without foreclosing the possibility of care?

We welcome traditional articles (6,000–8,000 words) as well as experimental submissions (visual essays, manifestos, aphorisms, or ficto-criticism).

To touch, move, bridge distance, merge, skim, alter, stroke, collide, bind, make contact, transmit, shift, flow, compel, absorb, repeat, affect, fertilise, respond, fuse, grow together, examine, model, connect, seek, relate, dissolve, symbiotic mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, reciprocal exchange.

Within the explosive power of touch, micro- and macro-perspectives are seamlessly connected across different scales. In a contemporary world that actively employs isolation and segmentation, exploring the power of touch in relation to artistic practice and expression is increasingly relevant.

The connection to the political macro-perspective and the broader picture is as pertinent as the micro-perspective and the moment of contact: the relationship between an artist, movement and materiality, ten thousand hours spent studying an instrument, deep immersion in craft traditions, alternative modes of touch that may enable new artistic practices, the relational conditions of a performing artist, and contact with an audience.

We seek artistic research that places artistic practice at the heart of the enquiry. Here, artistic investigations and the relationship between art and the surrounding world form the starting point for reflective work.

Multilingualism is encouraged and valued. We welcome artistic research in which language choices have been carefully considered, and the solution that best serves the artistic practice and its accessibility has been selected. If multiple languages are used, a complete translation into one of the following languages must be provided: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or English, so that the editorial committee can engage with the entire content.

ArteActa is a peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal for performative arts and artistic research, offering publication in multimedia formats (text, hypertext, photo, video, audio), mostly presented in Research Catalogue expositions (www.researchcatalogue.net) or as film essays.

An exposition draft consists of 2-3 pages, including media content, with specific research question/s, method/s, and references, artistic approach description, media examples, and the layout of the future exposition.

Final expositions in RC deadline – 15. 9. 2026

Approved final expositions will then undergo the standard editorial process and double-blind peer review.
