4. Reflect on personal metacognitive practices and identify areas for growth.

Agenda

1. Welcome and Overview (10 minutes)

• Icebreaker Activity:

  • Ask participants to share one challenging decision they made in a healthcare setting and how they approached it.

• Overview of objectives, agenda, and key terms (e.g., metacognition, reflection, self-regulation).

2. Understanding Metacognitive Practice (15 minutes)

• Mini-Presentation:

  • Definition of metacognition and its components: planning, monitoring, and evaluating.

  • Importance of metacognition in healthcare: improving clinical reasoning, minimizing errors, and fostering team communication.

  • Real-life examples of metacognitive practice in healthcare scenarios.

• Interactive Poll:
  Use a live polling tool to assess participants’ familiarity with metacognitive strategies.

3. Exploring Metacognitive Strategies (20 minutes)

• Small Group Discussion:

  • Divide participants into interprofessional groups.

  • Prompt discussion on how their roles require metacognitive thinking.

  • Assign each group a metacognitive strategy (e.g., reflective journaling, think-aloud protocols, checklists) and ask them to brainstorm its application in healthcare.

4. Applying Metacognition in Interprofessional Collaboration (30 minutes)

• Role-Playing Activity:

  • Present a case study involving a complex patient scenario requiring input from multiple healthcare professionals.

  • Participants assume specific roles (e.g., nurse, doctor, pharmacist) and work together to develop a care plan.

  • During the activity, participants must pause to verbalize their thought processes (metacognitive "think-alouds").

• Debrief and Discussion:

  • Analyze how metacognitive practices influenced team decisions and patient outcomes.

  • Discuss barriers to metacognitive practices in high-pressure environments and solutions to overcome them.

5. Feedback and Reflection (20 minutes)
