She feels abandoned by her mother and doesn't understand why she went to the United States. Unlike Enrique, however, she doesn't travel to the United States illegally as it is too dangerous and instead stays focused on school and her education. The thing that drives Belky's actions is the feeling of abandonment left in her by her mother. She uses this to study hard in school and hopefully have enough money to move to the United States and see her mother again one day. The author included her in the story because she is the sister of Enrique and because she provides a perfect example of how a Latino parent leaving to find work in the United States can affect a young child.
