They are an allusion to Marcus Brutus &  Doña Marina, two very infamous people who betrayed people, similar how Isabella was betrayed.  Another symbol is the snake statue. As through out history a snake is used as a person for  a treacherous person. The breakage of the snake statue is another symbol as it betokens their relationship at the end.
