For most of our students, who are considered ESL learners, a lot of scaffolding has to be provided for them to attain a deeper understanding of what they have read. However, most of them reply on their teachers to go beyond the 'surface' of the text. This is especially important since we live in such a globalised society nowadays.
However,  the responsibility of the build up of knowledge does not have to rest on the shoulders of the teachers alone. Students can be given the chance to co-construct  this knowledge with the teachers since many of them possess globalised prior knowledge with the frequent use of internet. Also, many of them travel on a regular basis with their family members.
