Please describe what you know about Social Media, what you would like to know, and what you have learned so far. Try some of the different media tools to add to the KWL shelf.

The entire way we receive our information, collect data, learn about public opinion has been influenced by social media. I think many students might use social media as their primary source of news. Things travel fast through these outlets, too!

While I do not use social media in my personal life, I appreciate using the different interfaces in this class. They are colorful, different, and more inviting to look at. It’s possible that for the students who would normally register for in-person classes, media brings that extra level of personalization that is missing.
Candice H.

To begin with, the structure of Learning Management Systems, like Canvas or Blackboard, is essentially a social media format. In my course, YouTube videos are a primary aspect of the course. Students embed them in posts to as part of assignments, and I embed them in pages, assignments and discussions. Social media is how it is in online learning.
mic harper

For the longest time, I held social media in contempt as not contributing to academic discourse. What I've realized is that social media has the potential to humanize online learning. In the case of YouTube, it permits my students and myself to have access to performances that otherwise we would never be able to hear/see/experience, learn from, and perhaps be inspired by to push for better musical performances. This has helped me accept social media as a part of my teaching toolbox.
mic harper
