At Holy Redeemer School, we focus on the 4 C's "Courtesy, Compassion, Community and Commitment". During our compassion quarter, we read the story in our 'Christ our Life" Religion book Matthew 25:34-40 ("where did we see you Lord?") After, we brainstormed ways we can show compassion to our family, friends and the community around us just as Jesus did. The students then wrote how they are compassionate to others. We integrated this lesson with teaching the components of sentence structure, capitalization and proper punctuation.

This lesson can be used in Religion or Reading class to practice retelling the story of the Passion of Christ and sequencing (LA.1.LRA.1). We read the story of Christ's death; depending on your Religion series you can use your textbook or another book (i.e. the Bible) to read the story together. Depending on the abilities of the groups (we do this in small groups), we pause the lesson to fill out the chart, the students can fill out the chart together, or they complete the sequencing chart after the story.

~ Nicole Hayes

Biography

I gave my kids a biography about a Saint of their choosing.

Then I called them back in small groups to read the biography once on their own and then I read it to them once in case they did not understand any of the words. We then talked about the person and recalled information about them. I then gave them a biography graphic organizer that I found for free on TPT. I numbered the organizer 1-5.

          1. Born

          2. Dead

          3-5. Important Facts

We then went back into the biography and highlighted these facts and then wrote 1-5 next to the highlighted parts so they know where the fact goes. EX: Highlight born put a number 1 next to it and then it would go in the number one spot on the graphic organizer.

The kids then transferred their info from the biography to the graphic organizer.

I then printed a black and white picture of their person and they glued it in the middle of the white paper. They then separated their paper into four sections. #1&2 went into one spot, #3 in one spot, and so on.

They wrote it in pencil and then went over all pencil marks in sharpie. They then water colored over sections all a different color.

I do the Daily 5 during our reading block. For their writing center most weeks students retell a writing story. On Mondays in morning we read the story from our Children's bible. A few students practice retelling the story. The rest of the week in morning meeting, students take turns retelling the story to freshen everyones memory. During the writing center students practice writing
the story. If they struggle to remember the story they can reread it in our bible or check in with a friend. The students also draw a picture to help them retell.
I review the story with students who struggled with details.
