Greatly Determined

“…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” p. 50

This quote shows that Beneatha is greatly determined because she once to be a doctor even if everyone brings her down. As much as everyone degrades her like Walter does she keeps her head up and keeps striving. When she tells Walter that she is going to be a doctor not a nurse it shows that she is set on getting one thing done. Her determination comes out especially when all of the money from the check gets lost. This shows how beneatha is greatly determined in what she does.

Caring

“I never got over that… …That that was what one person could do for another, fix him up—set up the problem, make him all right again. That was the most marvelous thing in the world…I wanted to do that. I always that it was the one concrete thing in the world that a human being could do. Fix up the sick, you know—and make them whole again. …I wanted to cure. It used to be so important to me. I wanted to cure. It use to matter. I use to care.” P. 133

This quote shows that Beneatha is very caring because she wanted to fix other people. When Beneatha said she wanted to fix other people up meant she cared about other people. She wants to fix up the sick because she "use to care". She also wants to because she "wanted to cure" and because "it use to matter". That is how Beneatha is a caring person.

I think Beneatha is a very sympathetic character no matter what everyone else does to halt her life path. I think she is very sympathetic because she wants to care for other people. When she says this she wants to be a doctor. Beneatha is a good person. She is a good person because she wants to be a doctor and care for the sick and helpless. She also doesn't care much when Walter loses her school money.

This art represents Beneatha because she lives in a small house but is full of color. She makes the most of her situation. The color red symbolizes her anger usually towards Walter or to the people halting her career path. The green side represents her happiness with her family or her boyfriend. The mood of this piece has mixed emotions with Beneatha and her life. Finally the hanging shirts represent all of her other emotions, and feelings.

I'm branching out,
I'm reaching for the stars,
& no one can tell me no.
Shattering glass ceilings
everywhere.

This represents Beneatha because she wants to do her own thing in life. In lines 1 and 2 it shows how Beneatha wants to be a doctor rather than a nurse. She wants to branch out and do her own thing. In line 3 it shows that even if Walter loses all of the money from the check she will keep going. This is a poem that explains Beneatha and her life.

Post 7 - Beneatha - Song Explanation

In the first 3 lines of the pasted lyrics it talks about how she is her own person. In Beneatha's case it means that if she wants to be a doctor instead of a nurse then she will be. Also in lines 5 and 6 it shows that Demi makes her own choices. When you think about it with Beneatha it is saying that if Walter says stuff then she will disregard him and do her. This is a power song for girls including Beneatha that relates to that time period.

Post 8 - Fences / ARITS - Theme

ARITS and Fences both share a common theme. A theme they share is that racism can greatly effect ones life path. In ARITS it shows when they move out of the old house into the new one, they are almost forced out of the house because their people aren't wanted in that neighborhood. This shows that they wanted the to be out of the neighborhood because of their skin color, so it was injustice against black people.

The theme of racism shows in Fences when the man wanted to be a driver but they wouldn't let him. He wanted to be a driver but he was just a garbage man on the back of the truck. Troy was stuck being a garbage man until the injustice ended when he got the position as the driver. This shows the comparison of the theme between the two stories.
