His 134 Week 14 Night 1 by Rhonda Ireland

“Get it all on record now - Get the films - Get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened.“
-Dwight D. Eisenhower
Allegedly, the Supreme Allied Commander remarked this after the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camps..Antisemitism (discrimination and hatred of those of the Jewish faith) still exists and is prevalent in the United States. Reflect on this. How could people say the Holocaust never happened? Why does this hatred persist?

Good evening, His 134 Scholars for our last Zoom.
My grandfather served under Gen Patton's 3rd Army. He went through the concentration camp of Buchenwald after it was liberated. He brought home pictures that Ike had commissioned to be taken. I truly think my horror with seeing these pictures led me to a life time of trying to understand such inhumanity.
We'll talk more at 6:15pm.

I will never understand how people can say that the Holocaust never happened. So much proof remains to this day, from metric tons of taken clothing and suitcases from victims as they entered the camps, video footage of victims after being freed from camps, to the camps themselves. Several of these camps stand as unholy monuments to the atrocities which took place, how could it be possible for every single piece of evidence to be falsified? In all honesty this hatred persists because of a bias in people to overlook horrors they do not wish to believe in.

It is hard to believe that there are people out there that disbelieve the Holocaust happened or think that not everything from gas chamber eliminations to harsh conditions in camps are true. There are a few reasons why I think people deny the Holocaust or say it was not as bad as people say it was. A lot of people probably think that Germany's final solution was to deport the Jews and not exterminate them. Another reason might be that people do not believe that the gas chambers or genocidal murders of Jews did not happen. The last reason people might think it was not that bad is because some do not believe the numbers of Jews that were actually killed during the Holocaust. They might have thought it was an overdramatic response.

Prejudice and bigotry are probably one of the biggest reasons. I think ignorance is also part of it. Through the years people tend to forget and even dismiss past events, for new generations it might seem like it never happened. I think that's why Eisenhower said to record it and to bring witness because he knew future generations will not believe it.

I actually did not know that denial and hatred continued to persist for this time period. It is simply too large to ignore. I feel that these things happen most likely because people wish to not remember that the Holocaust was even a part of history, especially for the Germans. There are also signs of both covert and blatant racism towards the Jewish faith, possibly in ways to intimidate and keep silent on what has happened to them so long ago. There are apparently situations that show how people did not believe that Jewish people were killed while being used for labor in concentration camps, and that the Germans did what they could to just deport them, even though it is not true.

It is unfortunate that there are people who say the Holocaust didn't occur since the outcome was horrific and devastating to the Jewish. There are many resources such as the Anne frank diaries and the various documentaries of those who went through the concentration camps and survived. I feel the hatred that is persistent due to people being against religion itself, which overpowers the amounts of facts they are. They believe what they want to hear is how I see it as. We continue to see this today with the racism of many races and religions despite the facts contradicting theories and opinions.

It's hard for me to comprehend when people don't believe that the Holocaust never happened especially because there were still people who had survived the whole thing that were still alive in recent years. Even overlooking the survivors point of views, there are countless books, photographs, articles, movies and shows based on the events that happened during the Holocaust. People would rather believe it never happened rather than learn to never repeat history. Jewish people were tortured and killed, forcing them to hide and be ashamed of what they believe in.

There is absolutely no reason for people to deny an event that has so obviously happened like this one. It seems to me that this would be one of the most documented long term events in world history to begin with. Those who deny the holocaust, must have the absolute highest form of ignorance there is and I cannot even think of what my response would be if someone I knew would try and tell me that the holocaust just did not happen. Eisenhower's words in this prompt are extremely prevalent in today's time, because they are true. No matter what may happen there will always be someone that will try and disprove it. Although this is true, the habit of questioning everything is often a good thing, since it keeps our historians held to a higher standard and gives people a better sense of trust in history when it has to be proven.

People would say such a thing and they'd also continue to say it because of their hatred and racist agenda towards Jewish people. Unfortunately when it comes to marginalized groups of people or groups of people that are being singled out and treated horribly in comparison to others, its common for racists to claim that what they’re experiencing isnt real or didnt happen the way they think. Its been shown throughout history time and time again, especially with slavery as well. I dont know how many times Ive heard people try to downplay or negate the severity of what happened and how it impacted the future generations. The same can be said for The holocaust and the victims/survivors as well.
