The challenge that Sufism poses to traditional hierarchies, whether caliphal or gender-based, inverts traditional sources of authority. This seems to only be sustainable, however, in the context of strong centralized authority. Without this, the disruption that Sufism constitutes would overly fragment the community.

A commonly recurring theme in this course has been the idea of insiders and outsiders in terms of the formation and development of Islamic law. During this time period, the community began to understand that there was a sort of danger in creating fabricated traditions that attempted to solve political and religious problems of the community as a whole. The idea of Qiyas attempts to compare and contrast the teachings of the Qur’an to those of the Hadith. This allows individuals to formulate solutions to issues within the community and daily life while still utilizing ideals from some of the oldest and most original pieces of Islam.
