I would suggest just trying as many things as you can and being willing to go outside your comfort zone. Also, make an effort to get to know other comm students. We're a friendly department and you never know when someone might be able to help you with a project or help you get a job in the future. 

2. Any tips for wood word?

The most important thing is to just keep producing content, which you already are doing. Each new story builds your experience and knowledge of journalism. I would say if you want to work on your writing, focus on being clear and concise and pay close attention to grammar and punctuation rules. 

3. Did you have any mentors? 

My official mentor for first year practicum was Emily Scholl, who is a senior this year. I learned a lot from her, but going forward in the department, Briana Ryan has been a great mentor to me. Mentors are a really important part of our department, and even though I don't think we alway click with our assigned mentors, I think it is important to develop other mentor relationships that do click.

4. What do you wish you know before taking multi com?

I wish that I would have realized before coming to Marywood that I wasn't going to be the only one who didn't have much experience in our field. I remember being nervous and worried that I would make a fool of myself, and the anxiety kept me from asking questions when I was confused about something. Looking back I had nothing to be worried about. We're all here to learn, and we all have different strengths coming in, so don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't be worried about looking foolish because there's a good chance other people are confused too. 

5. What has been the most difficult thing in the track for you?

The most difficult thing for me in our department is still doing interviews. I've done a million of them now, but I still get a little nervous before every one and I still feel extremely awkward during them.  

6. Is there anything you would have done differently?

In my freshman year, I wish I would have dived in a little bit quicker. I didn't write my first story for The Wood Word until late September/early October, and it took me a long time to feel comfortable enough to start asking all of the questions I had.
