In John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, the portrayal of wealthy landowners and their exploitation of impoverished migrant workers embodies the stereotypical image of monsters in society. These landowners, symbolizing the banking and economic elite, ruthlessly push impoverished farmers off their land, contributing to the cycle of poverty and despair faced by the Joad family and countless others. Steinbeck's powerful narrative highlights the monstrous consequences of unchecked capitalism and the dehumanizing impact it has on those struggling to survive during the Great Depression.

-Ms. Colucy

Troy attempted to prevent Cory for playing football by setting multiple requirements for Cory, which would be difficult, if not impossible, to juggle. Since Cory could not complete them, Troy banned him from playing football. Even worse, Troy used violence against Rose and Cory. Troy attempted to prevent Rose from leaving by grabbing her arm hard enough to hurt, and would likely have done worse if it was not for Cory stepping in. Later on, Troy and Cory had a physical fight which led to Cory being kicked out of the house.

-London

In Fences, the restriction of gender roles is an example of monstrous ideas that the characters face. Because of the system that society is built upon, gender affects the way of living in the film. Troy has the pressure on him to provide for his family and make a sufficient amount of money, which is especially hard during these times of struggle and poverty. While this is his role, his wife, Rose, stays home to take care of their children and upkeep the house. As a woman, Rose deals with a verbally abusive husband, but is required to keep a smile on her face and be strong for her family.

- Claire

Fences’ Troy Maxson is characterized like the qualities of a monster. This is demonstrated through the way he treats his family, looking at them as less than who they really are and meant to be. He is ignorant to the fact that his family is facing the same adversity and challenges as him and verbally abuses them. In a sense, he is narcissistic and rarely considers others and their dreams. Though, he does not realize his hurtful actions and words towards his family.

Troy failed to become a professional athlete, so when his son, Cory, had the chance he declared that his son could not be a professional athlete and that Cory would fail just like he did. This very self centered way of thinking ended up ruining troys relationships with his family. Wil
