Its core focus is to create a sensory and visual disruption between audience and performer. This can be done through performance or with lighting and sound.  

The theater of cruelty seeked to both shock and confront the audience, to go deeper to a point beyond words and to appeal and connect with the emotions of his audience to make them sit up and take notice 

The audience, Artud argued, should be  center piece of the performance. Theater should be an act of ‘organised anarchy'

In 1920, he moved to Paris with the intention to be a writer, but gain interest in the theatre scene. He also writes poetry & essays during this time.

Theatre of Cruelty was an experimental theatre proposed by Artaud which then became a big influence to the avant-grade 20th century theatre.

The Theatre of Cruelty had the objective to shock the audience through gesture, images, sounds & lighting. Artaud uses these as a tool for sensory disruption, so what was showed in his work would go beyond narratives and connect with the audience's emotions.

He was also influenced by  surrealism an art and creative and cultural movement. That was well known for using images juxtaposed together in an odd fascinating fashion.   

Both of these influences can be seen in the short film shown earlier in which unconnected by highly disturbing and disruptive imagery were juxtaposed together. With complimenting sounds of varying pitch and light intensity.

  • Artaud saw both the world around him and the theatre, itself, in need of change. 

  • He wanted to return back to the what he believed to be the basics of theater  he was influenced by Surrealism and at one time was a member of the movement. 
  • He used theater to awaken and bring out the dormant dream images of our minds. He wanted theater to be a catharsis for his audience and to also bring alive the audience subconscious.  

  • He also wanted to bring to the forefront the rationality of the human mind

  • The emphasis on the written or spoken text was significantly reduced. As such the belief that the text is gospel or as a powerful tool in theater was reduced significantly.   

  • Artaud referred to spoken dialogue as ‘written poetry’ he also had a large emphasis on improvisation acting and not to be restricted, by scripts.

  • Grotowski claimed Artaud’s interpretation of the Balinese dancers was ‘one big mis-reading’

  • (ritualistic) movement was a key element (often replacing traditional text/spoken words)
  • performers communicated some of their stories through ‘signs’
  • ‘signs’ in the Theatre of Cruelty were facial expression and movement
  • stylised movement was known as ‘visual poetry’
  • dance and gesture became just as effective as the spoken word
  • movement and gesture replaced more than words, standing for ideas and attitudes of mind
  • movement often created violent or disturbing images on stage

Conventions used during the video play were masques two of our readers used a black scarf or sleeping mask to cover the eyes to give a visual representation of blindness. We kept the props to a minimum and also used it as a sign for the  mice blindness.   We let our varies backgrounds be different to try and convey a sense of surrealism.

Juxtaposing images and sound to create a highly emotionally charged and slightly disturbing atmosphere and all this was done to heighten the poetic language. This was done to disrupt the visual and audio senses of the viewer. 

Of the nursery rhymes we intentionally made each of our group members read the various lines in order to give it a slightly improvised feel to the video play.
