They also had economic problems with the French to re-pay a loan for Haiti. Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti in 1844. A war begun among the two countries. </title>

         <title>Arawaks&#39; first encounter with people outside their community was Christopher Columbus. He arrived to the Bahamas in 1492 where the Arawaks lived on his ship, Santa Maria.  Columbus took advantage of them and kidnapped them to find out where the gold was. Columbus and his crew brought the Arawak over to Haiti and Dominican Republic previously known as Hispaniola. 1,500 Arawak men, women, and children were kidnapped. Columbus selected at least 500 Arawaks out of the group and sailed them over to Spain. Nearly half of the Arawaks died during the journey. As time went on Arawaks committed suicide to escape from Columbus reign. 150 years later only half of the original Arawaks (125,000) were left in Haiti. Arawaks were enslaved to find gold and Columbus&#39;s crew viciously murdered by beheading them. They also past from overworking and starvation,</title>
