Strategy 1

· Incorporating different historical events from different cultural perspectives

• By incorporating other histories and regions/cultures it gives students a wider understanding of history not just western history.

• Examples:

  • Historical Events:

    • The Renaissance: Began in the 14th century, a time of great culture and artistic achievement.

    • Meiji Restoration: Japan modernized in the 19th century becoming a major world power.

    • European Exploration: Europeans in the early 1600 began to explore the coastline of Australia.

• By incorporating these forgotten authors, it brings to light the different cultures.

Resources of Knowledge

• Students and/or families of the students share their knowledge from their cultural background, life experiences and work experiences.

  • Examples:

    • Doing family interviews

    • Having a guest speaker

  • Celebrating all holidays from the different cultures in the classroom

  • Decorating the classroom environment with pictures from the different cultures and students work.

Choice and Voice

• Students can choose to express themselves such as culture/background through their academics.

  • Examples:

    • Giving students the option to choose on projects or reading materials.

    • Allowing students to use their native language on some assignments but there must be translations.

• Throughout the room, things like flags, artwork, and pictures of famous people from different cultures are displayed.

• Include different authors that reflect different cultures, races, and genders.

Making the room a multilingual environment

• Putting labels on thing but in a different language like for bathroom put the Spanish, French or another.

• Have a welcome sign where it says welcome in many different languages.

• On the bulletin board, it features the language that goes with the culture.

• Have a spot for students who need a quiet moment or need/want to pray.

• Have seats in a circle formation or cluster formation.

• Establish a set of classroom rules and procedures that focus on respect, inclusion, and empathy.

• Using phrases like "we celebrate differences" helps students view the classroom as a united front.
