Light and darkness, is one of many Gothic tropes. Light is symbolized as the good in the world and the darkness is symbolized as the evil in the world. In Gothic stories, the use of light and darkness is used often. For example, in many Gothic novels and movies, authors will apply light and darkness to appeal to the readers pathos by using these tropes to make a scene dark and gloomy to symbolize evil. Or they will describe or make the scene bright to symbolize good.

Yin and Yang

A great example of light and darkness is yin and yang. Light and darkness are related to Yin and yang by “The elements stay in balance and are not static or separate, instead they are complementary and relative to one another because they come from a common source. Just like the yin and yang symbol itself, the nature of yin and yang lies in the interchange and interplay of the two components – as night flows into the day, the opposite forces in yin and yang flow into each other” (King). I believe a good balance of light in the darkness in Gothic stories is vital to making a true Gothic story.

A great example of a Gothic story that uses this trope is Stranger Things. When Joyce Byers, Will Byers mom, communicates to her son, who is in the Upside Down, through Christmas lights. When the lights were on, that meant her son was there and there was no evil. When the lights turned off, that meant evil was there and her son was gone.

Rhetoric of Light and Darkness

The rhetorical analysis of light and darkness is it appeals to the characters emotions. When we think of light and darkness we think of good and evil. For example, a child being scared of the dark, thinking something evil is lurking in the darkness, appeals to their pathos. Another example of appealing to pathos is the fear of the unknown, not knowing what is in the darkness and looking back at you. Light is related to the good so it appeals to peoples happiness and comfort.
