This quote shows how desperate Gatsby is to grab the green light, which represents Daisy. It shows how he wants her, but he is not able to get to her. The light represents the American Dream and that is Gatsby's only dream. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year recedes before us. It eludes us then, but that's no matter---to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out out arms farther.... and one fine morning-------" (pg 180)
This quote exacerbates the true meaning of the green light and how Gatsby views and responds to it. The ordeal he has been through for the entirety of the story comes down to this one line and we are greeted with this short passage of knowledge into the inner machinations of Gatsby's mind.
