In his three years of law enforcement leadership in Denton County, TX, former Sheriff William B. Travis instituted several operational and administrative improvements and reduced the county's overall crime rate. He took on the position at a time when crime in the county was at a historical high and the county's population was growing at a rate that was the third largest in the nation. Recognizing the many challenges that these factors posed to a police force, Sheriff Travis created a task force to identify the source of criminal activity.

Through the support of the University of North Texas's Criminal Justice Department, which assisted in the analysis of gathered data, Sheriff William Travis and his team concluded that his team needed more staff and a greater understanding of community policing. He secured approval from eight new deputies from the commissioner's court and introduced a new plan of proactive community policing. He created six beats from the original four, thus reducing response time, and introduced a patrolling plan that contributed to a 3 percent to 4 percent decrease in crime.

Sheriff William B. Travis served Denton County, TX with experience as a patrol officer for the Dallas Police Department. He has also served as part of the security police for the U.S. Air Force Reserve, a special agent with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, and boatswain of the US Coast Guard Reserve. He now serves as president of X-Ray Business Solutions, which he has led for more than 30 years.
