I can understand Watson and Garcia Research Studies

John Garcia- (Taste Aversion)
-Born in 1917 in Santa Rosa Cal and had a radiological defense laboratory.
Procedure- Control Group- Rats made sick but not given saccharin. Then given saccharin but then exposed to X-radiation but 3 days later be offered it again and record results.
Results- When the rats were given the solution to make them sick after drinking the drink they once enjoyed, they then associated that drink with sickness and refused to drink it, even though the drink and the illness were separated from 30 minutes to a few hours.
Ethicality- The experiment can be seen as both ethical or unethical. Radiation is destructive and could have killed the rats but this also can improve our understanding of people and animals.
Relevance and Impact- Many psychologists did not believe the results. Every organism is biologically predisposed to stop having a food or other objects if there is a negative association to it.

John Watson- (Little Albert)
Purpose/Background- to challenge Freud's theory about biological and instinctual processes with Watson's behaviorist theory. Watson's theory is related to classical conditioning because little albert goes through the process of associative learning.
Procedure- The baby was presented with various objects (neutral stimuli) and recorded the results. Then they struck a bar to scare him (unconstructed stimulus) when he was around the fluffy objects. The rat became a conditioned stimulus and then Albert began to generalize his response to the rat.
Results- Proved Watson's point that emotional behavior can be conditioned through stimulus response techniques. Created methodological behaviorism: behavior and not mental states.
Ethicality- Unethical because there were no guidelines and it created long term psychological damage to Albert because of no reconditioning.
Impact on Future Research- showed society the impact of emotion over behavior.
-Acquisition is when the response strength of the paired unconditional and conditional response are strengthened as time goes on
-When there is no unconditioned stimulus to continue classical conditioning, the fear of that thing will decrease. (extinction)
-Spontaneous recovery is when the second extinction period is experienced.

-Seligman's idea of learned helplessness. (Unscrambling not unscramblable words.)
Learned Helplessness: Seligman-
-Done by martin seligman and Steven Meyer.
-It is a classical conditioning experiment.
-Took 24 dogs off the street and put them into groups-escape,no escape, harness.
-Each dog received 64 shocks in 90 seconds
-Each dog had to press their head against panels to end the shocks if they were in the escape group.
-Dogs in the group receiving the uncontrollable shocks were given an easy escape.
-Groups that could escape the first time escaped much faster the second time than the other group.
-This was very unethical and there was not any way for the humans to get consent.
-Relevance is that hopelessness can cause depression and has helped us to understand etc.

~Variable- Random
~Interval- Time
-Ratio- # of responses
-Fixed- Set

Continuous reinforcement- every instance of behavior is reinforced
Ratio schedules- Reinforcement is based on the number of behaviors required.
Interval schedules- Reinforcement is based on the passage of time.

Fixed/variable schedules- when the reinforcement has a fixed schedule or unpredictable schedule.
-Variable interval is unpredicable

Purpose- To discover whether adult models
Procedure- In stages- Stage 1 is modeling and seeing whether children are aggressive or not with a model. Stage 2 is mild aggression arousal and then Stage 3 with a test of imitation.
Results- girls are more likely to incline verbal aggression while boys are more likely to incline physical aggression.
Ethicality- not ethical because kids did not leave in the same state as they went in and were not debriefed.
Discoveries- Males are more inclined to be aggressive to females and boys model their role models more than girls do.
