Pathos is the most common appeal in the lyrics, and it tries to convey the situations through the emotions of the speaker.
In the first verse, the speaker uses pathos to describe his happiness and enthusiasm, stating that he loves the country, and he wants to bring his wife, and his family stateside, but wants to save some money. After the first verse, he would go for a walk. More details on that will be discussed in the logos section, but one thing that is noticeable during the hook sections is how he would take walks as a way relive stress, and how it combines both pathos and logos in these sections (Zane and Angelakos).
As stated in the second and third verse, we notice the speaker has been making a few mistakes, and is in debt as a result. He would be hopeful that he could get out this.

It has logos for being logical by taking a walk to relive stress, which is also why it has some pathos in the lyrics. Taking a walk has been proven to relive some stress, and can help people.

The mother-in-law at one point wanted to stay with the speaker for a few days, but eventually wanted to stay for the rest of her life. Towards the end of the video , we see a woman struggling to pick up the paper. That woman may be the wife from the lyrics, as it shows that she was the only woman prominently shown in the video. Meanwhile, the speaker doesn't want his children to suffer the same thing hes going through, stating he "pray that they never feel my strife" (Zane and Angelakos).

In the beginning of Passion Pit’s video, we see a man, holding a ball sleeping on the ground of a street, only to be woken up by a passing dog. After the dog woke him up, the guy throws the ball and then the camera would pan to the ball perspective for the majority of the video. One strategy that the video uses is occasion, and utilize the ball’s location to reflect on lyrics’ enthusiastic to depressing nature. The weather would change from some sunny, to cloudy, and then in between. Cloudy weather usually comes out moodier then when its sunny out, and when the weather changes, so does the tone of the lyrics.

After the first hook, the ball would bounce above the clouds, panning to the dark moody clouds stated previously. The speaker says “practice isn’t perfect / with the market cuts and loss / I remind myself that times could be much worse”. This indicates that the speaker managed to screw up at some point, and is in some struggles, and wife notices this too, stating she would not ask much questions and “there’s not so much to ask and she’ll never flaunt around an empty purse” (Zane and Angelakos). After the speaker’s mother in law came, he stated “I watch my little children / play some board game in the kitchen and I sit and pray they never feel my strife” (Passion Pit). He uses both pathos and ethos to hope that his kids never have to suffer what he has been through, which is his debt crisis, as stated before the end of the second verse, where his accounts are overdrawn.

In between each verse, the speaker seems to want to take a walk a lot. While it does seem like the speaker loves to take a walk, the reason why he would walk a lot is because it relieves stress, probably due to the debt he is in. Walking has been proven to relieve stress, and it might be believable for the speaker to believe in these ideas.

The lyrics tells the story of a man who had plans to go somewhere with his wife, and how he wants go on a boat every once in a while. This is probably the closest thing that is related to the up-beat tone of the song, despite the beginning of the video, aside from the sunny weather mentioned previously. Towards the end of the first verse, the speaker says “Once a year I'll see them for a week or so at most / I took a walk.” (Zane and Angelakos). The speaker uses both the pathos and logos strategies during these segments to show how emotionally stressed he is in these situation, and how he logically uses this strategy to deal with this stress. Taking a walk has been one way to relive stress for most people, and the speaker seems to believe in this idea, and uses it to relive stress. But what kind of stress would he have to want to walk constantly?

Throughout the entire song, the lyrics have been become moodier as the song goes along. Despite all of this, the instrument sounds upbeat, and fun. It doesn’t fit the struggles the speaker goes though, and it makes the situation sound a lot better than it seems to be. This may show where the audience strategy comes in. As stated previously, the speaker hopes that his kids don’t have to go through his struggles. His children are the audience for this song, and the tone is meant to be a distraction for the kids to not realized the situation their dad is in.

After the second verse, the weather would start clearing up a little bit, but you can tell it’s still as gloomy as it was before. The ball would bounce all the way to a city street, and we would see a lady picking some papers, and then camera would pan towards the man from the beginning of the video, singing the song on a rooftop, on a bed, with a bunch of stuff like furniture, and other things. This would mean that the speaker and the man are the same people, as it seems it would align with the third verse, which indicates the speaker and wife being in the bottom of the barrel, being in debt, and the speaker would state that earlier that “we had taxes, we had bills / we had a lifestyle to front” (Zane and Angelakos). The speaker would say that they’ll make love, just like when they were young, and everything would get better. Despite all of that, the man would state “We could rent the Wart of socialists / and all their damn taxes / you’ll see I am no criminal / I’m down on both bad knees / I’m just too much a coward / to admit when I’m in need” (Zane and Angelakos). The man’s face and expression seems to be distressed, and depressed, just like the speaker would be in this situation.
The video ends with the ball bouncing across the city one last time, and before it bounces away from the camera, a pot shows up out of nowhere and breaks. This would indicate that the speaker’s going for a walk approach to relieve stress didn’t seem to be working for him this time. The speaker hopes that things will be okay; but in reality, he doesn’t know if he could solve his debt crisis. The speaker seems broken, just like the man from the video seems to be towards the end.

Conclusion

The video shows how vague “Take a Walk” wants to be, while also hinting the pain of the speaker, or the man in the video. The change in weather, the portrayal of the man, and the pot have hinted the gloomy nature of the lyrics of the song. The woman from earlier also has a role in this video, as it shows her struggles to pick up the paper. That woman may be the wife from the lyrics, as it shows that she was the only woman prominently shown in the video, and is seen during the third verse, where the speaker would tell his wife that everything will be fine. The vagueness of this entire video goes to show of who or what this song is really aimed for; his children
As the song stated previously, the speaker doesn’t want his children to suffer the same debt crisis he has. The speaker wants them to have much happier lives then what he and his wife have. The speaker made the song up-beat and happy because he wants his children to be happy, despite hearing his plead in the lyrics, and to a less degree, the video.
In contrast, Passion Pit’s “Take a Walk” could be about a guy who is very happy with life, and loves to walk constantly, as evident from a how the song is structured, and the up-beat nature of the instruments. Despite the positive attitude, “Take a Walk” is about a depressing story about a guy who thought big in life, but eventually came into debt. Instead of a guy who walks simply for his enjoyment, he is, in reality, walking to relive stress from his own issues. People can look into this in two ways. Seeing it as an up-beat track, or a depressing story disguised as one. If someone were to listen to this song once, they may think it’s a happy song, and probably never look back at it. But if others were to look at the song more closely, and understand the ques from both the song, and video; they would understand the depressing story about a guy, and his debt crisis.
