Second relation with Equality

Another relation we can find between “Equality” and the series is that throughout it all, we can clearly see how men held much more power than women and were considered more important. They were usually the ones who were in charge of the business and they did not consider women capable of doing it all by themselves. They also had a very important ego and were very confident with the control they had over women. But in Sarah’s case, this was the other way round. She was the one who maintained her family with her own business, one in which she worked very hard to achieve. “I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there, I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations…I have built my own factory on my own ground.” By this phrase we can understand that she started her business from cero
, meaning that she is a very hard-working person who fullfils
what she proposes. When her husband started realising that the business was only her’s, he became jealous as he wanted some recognition for all the hard work.

First relation with Equality

The first relation we can find between the series and “Equality in Society” is that all throughout it, we can see how the society in those times was very racist and because of this, many of them had many disadvantages and suffered a lot. For example, we can see this when Addie told Sara that she was less skilled or that she wasn't the face people wanted to see when buying her product. Supposedly, Sarah did not have the right figure to sell the hair grower.

Relation with Wealth

We can also relate “Wealth” with the series because as said before, black people were highly discriminated against, leaving them with less opportunities to get a job and earn money. Taking into account only Madam CJ Walker´s family we can clearly notice how they suffered more than other white families because of their wealth. As they had a harder time to sell their product, they were constantly worried about their food, health, etc. In conclusion, this series makes a huge deal with this theme by clearly showing how wealth in those times was very different depending on skin color, your profession and other factors.

Third relation with Equality

The third and last relation we can establish between “Equality” and the series, is that in those times, gay people were descriminated. For example, when Sarah saw her daughter Lelia, kissing a girl called Esther; she was shocked and obliged her to break away immediately. She reacted like this, because in those times it was very rare to see a gay couple. In the moment Sarah saw her with another girl, she coudln´t believe it. Finally, she could accept her just as she was, because the love and bond between mothers and daughters is unconditional despite the differences. I do not agree, this still happens now and it is not really the core of the show.Rather, it is the inequality between the genders.
