Angie Thomas focuses on this throughout the entire book. “I’ve seen it happen over and over again: a black person gets killed just for being black." This focuses specifically on how black people tend to be killed because of assumptions about their color and not what they're actually doing. "I wish people like them would stop thinking that people like me need saving.” This is another time when she discusses the fact that people make assumptions based on her color. “Funny how it works with white kids though. It’s dope to be black until it’s hard to be black.” once again people assume things like it's cool to be black without knowing the struggles they go through.
