The lady in the blue sari whom you see in the photograph is none other than my late grandma. The photograph was taken on 2 November 1989 when she retired from being a Tamil and Art teacher in Huamin Primary School. She is receiving farewell cards from her students on stage and is also signing/writing messages in their notebooks in the canteen.

This photograph means a lot to me because although she wrestled with dementia for 6 years, from 2010 to 2016, before her passing or her official "retirement" from this world, I'd always look back fondly at this photo of the woman who once instilled wisdom and cultivated young minds before her cognitive decay.

2) The photograph’s edges are a blurry halo—A foreshadowing of the fog of dementia that would engulf her. Or could it be a testament of the faint radiance of the beacon of a woman she once was, before she succumbed to the decay of time.

She was a lighthouse, trudging on as time’s thieving ticking hands ravaged her thoughts. But she was anything but a defeated beast.
