The limbic system, which is involved in processing emotions and controlling memory, “lights” up when our ears perceive music.

The chills you feel when you hear a particularly moving piece of music may be the result of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that triggers sensations of pleasure and well-being. As your brain becomes familiar with a particular song, your body may release dopamine upon hearing just the first few notes of the song. Just as Pavlov’s dogs learned to associate food with a ringing bell – and eventually began drooling at the sound of a bell, even when no food was in sight – our bodies actively anticipate pleasure upon hearing familiar notes.

Music can have a profound effect on both the emotions and the body. Faster music can make you feel more alert and concentrate better. Upbeat music can make you feel more optimistic and positive about life. A slower tempo can quiet your mind and relax your muscles, making you feel soothed while releasing the stress of the day. Music is effective for relaxation and stress management.

Research confirms these personal experiences with music. Current findings indicate that music around 60 beats per minute can cause the brain to synchronize with the beat causing alpha brainwaves (frequencies from 8 - 14 hertz or cycles per second). This alpha brainwave is what is present when we are relaxed and conscious. To induce sleep (a delta brainwave of 5 hertz), a person may need to devote at least 45 minutes, in a relaxed position, listening to calming music. Researchers at Stanford University have said that "listening to music seems to be able to change brain functioning to the same extent as medication." They noted that music is something that almost anybody can access and makes it an easy stress reduction tool.

Invented by Thomas Edison, this device was the first to capture and reproduce sound, paving the way for the recording industry.

Key points!

It enhances your attention. Having background music can help you focus.

Studies have shown that listening to music improves your memory and this phenomenon is called the ‘Mozart Effect’.

It is seen that listening to music also improves your ability to do mental maths.

Music can calm people who feel the pressure or stress up during IAS exam preparation.

Listening to music releases dopamine which is a neurotransmitter that controls the brain pleasure centres. This means that listening to music relaxes an individual.

Music's impact on concentration and academic performance has been a subject of considerable debate. Research suggests that background music, particularly instrumental or classical music, can enhance concentration by creating a more engaging and less distracting environment. Music with a steady tempo and minimal lyrics can help some individuals block out external noise and reduce stress, potentially leading to improved focus and productivity. However, this effect can vary significantly from person to person; for some, music may become a distraction rather than a help, especially if it involves complex melodies or lyrics that compete for cognitive attention.

In terms of academic performance, the evidence is mixed. While some studies indicate that certain types of music might improve mood and motivation, leading to better study habits and outcomes, others find that music can interfere with tasks that require deep cognitive processing, such as reading comprehension or complex problem-solving. Ultimately, the relationship between music and academic performance may depend on personal preference, the nature of the task, and the type of music being played. Therefore, while music can be a useful tool for concentration for some, it's essential for individuals to assess their own responses to find what works best for their learning and performance goals.

Listening to a piece of music that was played a lot during a significant life event (e.g., a family celebration) many years ago can trigger a deeply nostalgic emotional experience. The feeling is not in the music, but in what it reminds us. Many listeners use music to remind themselves of valued past events, becoming nostalgic. For example, nostalgia is a powerful force around Christmas ('White Christmas'). Some people may have a fond memory associated with Elgar (Pomp and Circumstance) for graduation ceremonies, and Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major,” (or Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” in C major) for weddings.

Music offers a resource for emotion regulation. For instance, sad music enables the listener to disengage from the distressing situations (breakup, death, etc.), and focus instead on the beauty of the music. Further, lyrics that resonate with the listener’s personal experience can give voice to feelings or experiences that one might not be able to express oneself. Listening to soft and slow music, such as classical music, is better for managing negative emotions compared to hard or heavy music. Listening to happy music can influence the way one perceives the world in a stressful situation. For example, upbeat tunes can give you an optimistic outlook and make you feel better.

Key point 1:

>The Resurgence of Older Music.

This may be why we’ve seen an upswing in ultra-successful songs that use instrumentation and production choices popularised in previous decades. The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights is his most successful single to date in both commercial and critical terms, championing an 80’s-infused Synthpop style. Two of the more memorable songs of the last decade, Daft Punk’s Get Luckyand Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk both use 70’s-style Disco and Motown motifs respectively.

>Infinite Sources of Inspiration

It’s clear how technological advancement has affected music consumption, the biggest change in the recorded music business model since the switch to records from sheet music. If you’ve got an internet connection, you can make your music available to everyone, regardless of where you are in the world or how you wrote and recorded it.

Key point 2:

Electronic music as a genre grew exponentially in Quebec following the adoption of these new tools, artists like Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, and Plastikman (Richie Hawtin) pushed the boundaries of what was possible with digital technology. In response to the rise of digital piracy, the music industry implemented a variety of anti-piracy measures including digital rights management (DRM). DRM worked by encrypting the music file and adding a digital signature that could only be decoded with a specific software key. This reduce the risk of pirating songs which allows the artist to have more earnings which gives them motivation to create more music.

The Tiktok algorithm often picks similar-sounding hooks and audio that inevitably go viral, causing a homogenization of musical tastes. This algorithm may restrict the diversity of music that becomes mainstream on the app and consequently within the wider music industry. People are almost writing with the hook as the main purpose. A song no longer has to necessarily be good, it just needs a 15-30 second clip that sounds nice and relatable for a certain prompt and/or dance. Artists are songwriting quickly with the intention of easy cash grabs rather than to make the art they really like. When TikTok users claim to want the full version of an original audio, a lot of viewers really just want the same clip on loop without getting tired of it. The hook of a song shouldn’t be the sole appeal when a song is multifaceted depending on the story or topic within the tune. Many amazing songs have been reduced to a mere few seconds, making the rest of the lyrics seem irrelevant or unimportant.
