In the story, there is a woodcutter who lost his ax in a pond, and stays true to which ax is his. Because of this, he is rewarded with a gold, silver, and his ax by a mermaid. In paragraph 12, the author states, "‘My friend,’ said the mermaid, ‘your honesty deserves a reward. Take all three axes home with you, and your children will never go hungry again.’” This reference shows the poor woodcutter didn’t lie by refusing both the gold and silver axes and staying truthful to his old one. Because he was honest, he received a reward, therefore proving that honesty is the best policy.  His brother tries to do the same but lies about which ax is his. On page 2, the author states, "’For your dishonesty,’ she said, ‘you'll have no ax at all.’ And then she vanished, leaving the woodcutter's brother poorer than ever.” This demonstrates that when the woodcutter’s brother lied to the mermaid saying the golden ax was his, he was dishonest and didn’t receive any reward. He actually lost his ax as well and proving once again that being honest is always the best solution. It is a perfect example of rewarded honesty and punished dishonesty. In the story, the mermaid brought out many axes made of precious metals, but the woodcutter only asked for his old, iron one. As the story states, “‘My friend,’ said the mermaid, ‘your honesty deserves a reward. Take all three axes home with you, and your children will never go hungry again.’” The man had refused the gold and silver axes when he could have lied and taken the valuable ones. Instead, he only claimed the normal, iron one as his. When the story was told at the woodcutter's house, the brother of the woodcutter got jealous of the wealth. He purposely dropped his ax in the same pond, and when he started to cry, the mermaid appeared with the gold and silver axes. When the brother claimed the gold ax as his,  the story goes on to say, “ ‘For your dishonesty,’ she said, ‘you'll have no ax at all.’ And then she vanished, leaving the woodcutter's brother poorer than ever.” The man had tried to lie to the mermaid, and had lost his ax forever. The text shows that the woodcutter refused the axes that were made of silver and gold and only accepted his own, plain, iron ax. In contrast, when the man’s dishonest brother tries to get the same fortune, he was dishonest. He sat down and began to sob, for his ax was the only way he could chop wood, and afford a house and food. A mermaid heard him crying for his ax, and decided to help him. She swam into the lake and found a gold ax. The woodcutter denied that it was his. She swam in to the lake and retrieved another sliver ax. The woodcutter did not lie when either of the axes were shown to him. He claimed that his ax was a plain iron ax with a wooden handle. After his own ax is retrieved, the mermaid lets him keep all three axes. In paragraph twelve, the author states, “‘My friend," said the mermaid, ‘your honesty deserves a reward. Take all three axes home with you, and your children will never go hungry again.’” This shows that the man was honest. For this, he was rewarded. The next day, his brother tries to do the same thing. But when the mermaid brings the gold ax, he claims it, which makes the mermaid angry. According to the passage, the mermaid said, "‘For your dishonesty,’ she said, ‘you'll have no ax at all. ‘And then she vanished, leaving the woodcutter's brother poorer than ever.” Since the woodcutter’s brother was dishonest by throwing his ax in the water on purpose, and claimed an ax that was not his, he lost his own ax.
