Later that day, Hutu forces attacked Tutsi members in the capital city of Kigali. Thousands of people were slaughtered. The next day, barriers were set up and the Hutu start systematically killing Tutsi members, going door to door in neighborhoods and raiding schools and churches. The mass murdering of the group named the Tutsi is the main problem in the Rwandan Genocide.

What are the root causes of the problem?

The root cause of the genocide was when Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian Cyprien Ntaryamira were flying on a plane when it was shot down by unknown assassins. The Hutu group inferred that members of the Tutsi were the assassins, so the Hutu planned to eliminate the Tutsi once and for all. This was the root cause of the genocide. However, the lack of involvement from the United Nations may have also had an effect on how long the genocide lasted. The killing of the Rwandan and Burundian presidents is why the genocide began.

How has the problem affected the community directly?

The problem has affected the community directly because hundreds of thousands of people were murdered. It started on April 7, 1994 when 10 peacekeepers were tortured, and a fight broke out between the Tutsi and the Hutu. More than 1 million people were forced to flee to other countries, and approximately 800,000 people were killed. In total, more than 2 million people were affected by the genocide, and many more were left homeless, without food or water, and with family members dead or missing. These problems have had a horrible affect on the comunity.

Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

Sadly, not enough has been done to help end the Rwandan Genocide. The genocide is referred to as the quickest killing spree the world has ever seen. In the span of just 100 days, a little less than 1 million people were killed, which is roughly 15% of Rwanda’s population at the time. In the Holocaust, 2,740 people were killed each day. However, almost 10,000 people were killed per day in the Rwandan Genocide. An estimated 1 million people were forced to seek refuge in neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. The people of Rwanda went through hell and back in this genocide, so the rest of the world should be concerned about this issue.

In Rwanda, not much was done to address the Rwandan Genocide. Most, if not all, communications with other countries were destroyed. The Hutu also set up barriers to keep people from escaping. However, on April 8, 1994, an interim government was formed in Rwanda to try to control the crisis. This was unsuccessful, and it took more than 2 months before the genocide was addressed again. On June 14, 1994, France launched a military-humanitarian intervention, named Operation Turquoise. The operation was aimed to stop the slaughtering, but it also attempted to give humanitarian aid to refugees and the surviving Tutsi. This operation helped to end the Rwandan Genocide.

What are the differences and similarities between Anne Frank and the Rwandan Genocide?

The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank is the diary of a young girl who has to hide away during the Holocaust, a systematic killing (genocide) of Jews during World War II. The Rwandan Genocide was a mass killing of the Tutsi during 1994. In both genocides, millions of people were killed. The people were killed because of their ethnic beliefs in both cases. In the Rwandan Genocide, Hutu forces ambushed neighborhoods, schools, churches and hospitals, and hoped to kill as many Tutsi as possible. In The Holocaust, instead of simply ambushing and killing as many Jews as possible, Germans systematically forced Jews to work in concentration camps or to be gassed to death, slaughtering over 6 million people. Another difference is that in the Holocaust, allied forces eventually invaded German territory and liberated concentration camps. However, in the Rwandan Genocide, over 1 million people were already killed when French forces decided to help Rwanda. These are the similarities and differences between Anne Frank and the Rwandan Genocide.
