Benvolio, a kinsman of Montague, tries to break up the fight. Meanwhile, the kinsman of Capulet named Tybalt, joins in on the fighting. Prince Escalus breaks up the scuffle by threatening the fighters a death penalty if they continue disturbing the peace. The fight eventually breaks.

Capulet's wife and Juliet try to stop her rambling. Capulet's wife changes the topic by talking about Juliet's thoughts on marriage. She replies that she lacks interest. Lady Capulet then tells her Paris is interested in her. Juliet says she'll think about it when she sees Paris at the party.
