The narrator  begins to see his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, for who he is, he is like his forefathers. He says “ … Yet importunate and terrible influence which for centuries had molded  the destinies of his family and which made him what I now saw him- what he was.” The Usher family has a history of incest in the family.  The narrator starts to realize that Roderick’s environment is affecting his sanity. One night, Roderick abruptly wakes the narrator from his sleep. Roderick tells the narrator that his sister, lady Madeline, was dead. Mr. Usher wanted to bury his “deceased” sister in the vaults. He requested his friend to accompany him in the arrangements for the temporary entombment.

The narrator realizes that the sister and brother had a strong similitude towards each other. He also realizes that the siblings are twins. Lady Madeline died due to her disease, Catalepsy. The narrator and Roderick  placed lady Madeline in the tomb and screwed down the lid. Roderick’s mental state changes. He begins to go mad, he no longer luminousness in his eyes. The narrator feels as if Roderick’s insanity is affecting him. The narrator has strong feelings that his own mind is going insane by about the seventh or eighth night that lady Madeline. He can’t  sleep because of the indefinite sounds from the storm.  He finds himself pacing back and forth, he then sees a light by the staircase.

Poe foreshadows a few different things through The Fall of the House of Usher. One thing he foreshadows is the incest of the Usher house. He begins to foreshadow this on page 323, “ ...that the entire family lay in the direct line of descent, and had always with trifling and very temporary variation, so lain.” This quote is telling the reader that there were no branches in the family tree, it just goes straight meaning that all the children in the Usher family all have the same blood line.  He brings it up again on page 329, “ The belief however, was connected ( as I have previously hinted) with the gray stones of the home of his forefathers… in the order of the arrangement if these stones as in that of the many fungi which overspread them .” “ … The result was discoverable… yet importunate and terrible influence which for centuries had moulded the destinies of his family…” This quotes uses the stones to represent the Usher family and the fungi represents the sickness that is spreading onto them. The final foreshadowing of the incest is when Poe says on page 330, “A striking similitude between the brother and sister now first arrested my attention.” This quote shows that Roderick and lady Madeline have feelings for each other more than a sister and brother should.

On page 325, “ I shall perish said he, “I must perish in this deplorable folly. Thus, thus, and not otherwise, shall I be lost. I dread the events of the future not in themselves, but in their results…  In this pitiable condition- I feel that the period will reason together, in some struggle with the grim phantasm, FEAR.” This quote foreshadows that Roderick is afraid of the future, and that his fear is what leads him to his insane state.  Another quote where Roderick speaks about his mental condition is on page 333, “... many minutes, many hours, many days , I have heard it-yet I dared not- I dared not to speak! We have put her  living in the tomb… I now tell you that I heard her first feeble movements in the hollow coffin…. Madman! I tell you that she now stands without the door!”  This quotes foreshadows that Madeline was alive the entire time and that she is free from the tomb.

There are a couple hints that she is still alive. The narrator hears sounds during the storm,on page 330 it says, “ … certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals...” This quote gets the reader beginning to wonder what those sounds are. On page 332 the sound is heard again, “ It was, beyond doubt, the coincidence alone which had arrested my attention; for amid the rattling of the sashes of the casements, and he ordinary commingled noises of the still increasing storm.. A low and apparently distant. But harsh protracted, and most unusual screaming or grating sound.”  This foreshadows that lady Madeline is trying to get out of the tomb.

The title foreshadows the ending of the story. In the beginning it is described that there is a crack in the house on page 323 it states, “ extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn.” The stones on the house represent the Usher’s ancestors. The crack in the house symbolizes that Roderick and lady Madeline didn’t have children. When lady Madeline is trying to escape her tomb the house echoes and it makes Roderick become more insane. When Madeline is freed from the tomb she stands outside the door of where Roderick and narrator. She collapses on top of Roderick and that is when the house crumbles. On page 333, “ with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a  corpse.” “ While I gazed, this fissure rapidly widened… and the deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the “House of Usher.”
