Students take the lead of their learning, express what they want to learn about and make choices. It's important teachers know students interests so students can be guided and the learning comes from them. Teachers at our school set up the stage for inquiry and allow students to demonstrate ownership of their learning.

From the beginning of the year, students have agency on deciding what rules they want in their classroom, who they want to work with (depending on the task and subject area) and how they want to demonstrate their learning, self efficacy. (different forms of expression). At Stokes teachers are careful at looking at their cultural beliefs, they want students to learn from others, but respect their beliefs and cultural backgrounds. It's important for all to embrace everyone's cultures, so students can see themselves as part of the community.

Like camembert and camembert, there is "agency" and "agency." The question is in the how, especially in terms of implementation with teachers. I also think there needs to be a discussion about the scope of agency. In my mind, ideally, agency should be balanced with structure (freedom within structure), since without that, students will tend to lapse into confirming or reexamining that which they already know or like--or it can lead to fluffy teaching.

I think when schools create routine around agency it becomes easier. When a space has been established and kids have participated in this routine, it becomes familiar and they are more easily able to participate in the routine. I suppose that that could be said about all of life. We are creatures of habit... even despite how sporadic and spontaneous we might appear. haha
