LAUREN -  is the main character of the novel which is told through her prespective in the form of her diary  entreies. At the begging of the narrative she is 15, and in the final chapter she is 18. Raised in a gated community in Robledo, California. Lauren is african-American, the daughter of Revered Olimina and an unamed mother who died in childbirth. Laurens mother was a drug addict, and as result Lauren was born neurolical condition called hyperempath, which means she expericnes the pleasure and pain of those around her. 

KEITH - Keith is laurens brother, the oldest son of Revered Olimina and cory. he is 12 when the bokk starts and is stubborn, reckless, and often cruel. he is desperate to grow up quickly and dreams of moving to Los Angeles. after being given a BB gun for his 13th birthday, he begins to leave the neighboorhood and earn money of his own accord, assumedly by dealing drugs. Before long, he is tortured and killed
