Amir is the son of a well known successful businessman in the city of Kabul. He is the main protagonist of this story. His main goal though-out this novel is redeeming himself in the face of both his father and his friend, Hassan. The two are half-brothers and have a mixed relationship, switching back and forth from him being really close friends, to competing with him out of jealousy trying to gaining affection from his father. Overall, Amir as a character is affectionate, loving and especially repenting.

1. “ I thought about something Rahim Khan said just before he hung up, almost as an afterthought. There is a way to be good again.” (2); Foreshadowing what will happen in the future. Some event will occur and inorder to redeem himself he will try to do what Rahim Khan says.

2. “All I saw was the blue kite. All I smelled was victory. Salvation. Redemption(69); Redeem himself in the face of his father.

3. “And suddenly Hassan's voice whispered in my head: For you a thousand times over. Hassan the Harelipped Kite runner”(2); One again foreshadowing the events that will occur, Amir getting a flashback when he and Hassan were young and Hassan was always committed to helping Amir.

4. “One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that ally, stand up for Hassan -- the way he’d stood up for me for all those times in the past -- and accept whatever was going to happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran” (82); Self explanatory, Hassan has done so much for Amir and this is the time that he can repay him for all the favours.

5. “A way to end the cycle. With a little boy. An orphan. Hassan’s son.”(198); As foreshadowed in the first quote, Rahim Khan calls Amir and says theres a way to redeem himself and essentially atone for his sins.

6. “Baba and I were more alike than I’d ever known. We had both betrayed the people who would have given their lives for us. ” (238); Shows the connection between his father and himself.

7.“It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime, Amir.” (150); His father is speaking with experience that every action has a consequence, some that can change the course of a persons life.

8. “‘For you, a thousand times over,’ I heard myself say.” (391) There are various time this is quoted but the one that resonated with redemption most is in the end of the novel. In his mind he has finally broken the loop of guilt he had felt, and after everything that occurred, like fighting Assef and successfully adopting the son of his best friend Hassan, he has redeemed himself.

9. “What was so funny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in a corner of my mind, I’d been looking forward to this.” (303); In the mind of Amir, he feels as if he'd finally got the burden of betraying Amir off his back by getting beaten up by Asif.

10. “Because the truth of it was, I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I? The least I could have done was to have had the decency to have turned out a little more like him. But I hadn’t turned out like him” (20); Since the cause of the death of Amir's mother is giving birth to him, he feels somewhat guilty because of not being able to live up to his father expectations.

The main device that is used to develop the overall theme is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing in The Kite runner is used a-lot, so much so that a whole chapter(1) is detected to it. When Amir is called by Rahim Khan he is told that there is a way to atone for his sins. This is a mix of foreshadowing and another literature device called flashback. He is reminded of his past and thinks of the words of Hassan "And for you a thousand times over" and how sincerely devote his friend was.

Symbolism is also one of the more important literary devices in this novel. An example of a specific usage of this device is the kites in the kite festival. The kites initially represent success because of Amir's achievement of winning the kite festival. The significance later takes a dark turn when Hassan went kite running and comes across Assef. He then becomes the victim of rape by him while refusing to give up the kite cut off.

This is a text from towards the beginning of the novel where Amir is trying to prove his worth to his father. His his eyes, winning in the kite festival will essentially redeem himself in the sense that his father will be proud. With a long history of having a complex relationship with his father, Amir's father indirectly through actions, wished his son to be more like him. This gave Amir the mindset of wanting to always prove himself. I can connect to this text as well as the overall relation ship between Amir and his father. Although not as extreme, I want to prove myself to my parents and make them proud. This is something that a-lot of people relate to. Trying out best at what we do in order to make someone proud. For me, it's school. Achieving high grades and going to a good University is what in my opinion will be what makes them proud.
