During the Industrial Revolution people were paid next to nothing. In the 1700’s and 1800’s the Industrial Revolution happened, the beginning of manufacturing happened. 6 days a week the lower class had to work long hours in terrible working conditions, where the rich didn’t have to because they owned the land being bought for manufacturing (FEE, 1986). The people who worked was paid very small amounts for what they did. They would normally work 12-14 hours a day and extra time on top of that when it was busy. The average weekly wage for men was 15 shillings, women were paid 7 shillings and children were paid 3 shillings (BBC, 2014). To summarise, minimal wages were paid to those who worked a lot all the time gave a hard life for people to survive.

In the Industrial Revolution minimal wages unfortunately lead to poverty. The people were paid so little in the industrial revolution that they were barely able to cater for themselves and their families. Everything was quite expensive and if you were not a part of the rich and the upper class you struggled to live on the wage you were being payed (Ehow, 2016). They struggled to provide food for breakfast lunch and dinner, shelter to sleep in, education for their children, health care and furniture to live a comfy and healthy life style (Lambert, 2016). “I have no wages, but two days a week at present; but when I am working at some jobs we can make a little, and at others we do very poorly” – Joshua Drake (Chadwick, 2016). In conclusion families struggled to maintain a healthy life style thanks to the minimal wages the people were payed.

The Rerum Novarum was written in the industrial revolution to address the conditions of the working class in order for the hours, wage and work load to be fair. The Rerum Novarum was written by Pope Leo XIII in the Vatican, Rome and was addressed to all Catholic bishops. The Rerum Novarum accessing the unfair and poor working wages in verse 39. It states that people became slack frequently because of the overload of labour and the long hours with minimal pay. (The Holy See, 2016 ). The Rerum Novarum wanted to raise awareness for the working conditions and the minimal wages so that there could possibly be an end to the unfair labour (Ynah Querido, 2014). The Rerum Novarum says that we need to make a change in the way we do things because it’s not right and unfair, it wants to give people equal rights and a fair life to be lived. The Rerum Novarum was written to the catholic bishops in order to make a difference in manual labour.

Discuss the teachings
and scripture that informed the response to your issue

The Catholic Church’s response to minimal working wages was informed through the catholic social teachings that the bible states. The Church’s responses are informed by the church laying down how they expect people to live which is in a fair manor. The catholic social teaching participation, means to make a more human and just society (Caritas, 2016). In the Industrial Revolution, the working class were treated poorly and the Rerum Novarum sought to make a response that was inspired by the teachings of the Bible that aimed to make society more humane and just. The scripture reference from Matthew 12:18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations”, shows that the rich people made the poor do everything for them with minimal wages (Bible gateway , 2011). Being payed per thing made or built and working for 12 hours is unfair pay. The bible passages inspire the church to act because they wont to follow the way Jesus said we should do things. To summarise, the churches response to minimal working wages informed the Rerum Novarum to make a change.

Explain some of the reforms the occured during the Industrial Revolution

In the Industrial Revolution many things where invented or made in order for modern labour and to make life easier. A reform is something that has been created or adjusted to improve something and make it better (FARLEX, 2011). The point of the industrial revolution was to make society a better place and many reforms were made to improved labour of the working class and community. The industrial revolution limited the working hours, children were permitted from working underground, children were to receive minimum 2 hours of education a day, under the age of 9 children were not to work on cotton mills and children under 8 were prohibited to work with men (Archives, 2009). To summarise, the reforms in the industrial revolution were made to improve the working conditions and labour.
