I thought we no longer used the term Hyflex? I am feeling really confused by all of this and hope the session will help. Thanks.

Hi, Yes that is what has been outlined within the central Flexible Digital Education Strategy, mostly I think, to help avoid confusion at this stage between staff and students and also because our infrastructure currently does not support fully, this approach.

However, this session was scheduled earlier in the year and I see no harm as academics and professional staff, in continuing to discuss hyflex/ the all important underpinning principles and other modalities of learning and teaching, as we reflect on what we have learned so far and look to the future within our action planning at a more local level. In fact, I think it is crucially important! Thanks for adding to the discussion, really appreciated. Wendy G.

Not sure "we" have control over the language used by those currently debating the future of learning in Higher Education. The "term" is out there and being used nationally and internationally. It's not going to go away! A certain amount of confusion is inevitable in periods of radical change but attempting to bury one's head in the linguistic sand is probably not going to help.

There is of course the danger of conflating 'hyflex' (or any similarly principled modality) with 'online' or 'flexible digital education' ....more generally. This may in itself cause confusion, when arguably 'hyflex' is just one of many modalities which might be offered/ used within any given context.

The possibility of conflation of terms is ever present in language, as indeed are the problems of definition; however, seeking to restrict the use of certain terms because they imply an approach which is not congruent with one's own understanding (ie confusing) is to seek to impose a personal definition. In such circumstances, a little "confusion" might be preferable.

Is HyFlex just one of many modalities? Or is it an approach that offers the student the autonomy to choose the modality which best suits their needs? Not a modality in itself but a principle that shifts choice of modality from the the institution to the student?
Might that be perceived as a threat?
A

''Is HyFlex just one of many modalities? Or is it an approach that offers the student the autonomy to choose the modality which best suits their needs?''
For me, I think this is an important part of the debate, as inevitably different sources detail different perspectives and interpretations. Arguably, I think it could be either...a discrete modality or an overarching approach - possibly depending on the extent/ consistently of flexibility being offered to students overall?
