Dewy Finn is kicked out of the band he created and replaced right before Battle of the Bands. His roommate, Ned Schneebly the substitute teacher, is dating a girl named Patty who is constantly giving Dewy a hard time. While home Dewy answers a call for Ned and finds out how much a substitute teaching position makes (more than sitting on the couch doing nothing) and decides he is going to impersonate Ned. While subbing Dewy discovers his new students are musically gifted and decides he is going to start a new band with the fourth graders. He gives every one a role in the band from the musicians to the manager, and teaches them about Rock and Roll. Dewy is busted at parent teacher conferences for impersonating Ned after Patty called the cops on him. They were already entered for the battle of the bands so the kids get on a bus and head to Dewy's apartment, pick him up, and go play an awesome show. They don't win, but they come back for an encore, everyone is happy and Dewy opens a School of Rock where the kids come and play music, and Ned also ends up teaching music to little kids.

+ The teachers were nice and liked each other when they all sat together for lunch. Ms. Mullins, the principal, means well but is sometimes too intimidating for her own good. They all seemed to really care about the kids.
- The principal made the decision to allow a field trip she didn't know anything about while drinking. Dewy came to his first day as a sub hungover.

No, this is not an accurate portrayal of teachers or how school operate. I think they would notice if the wrong substitute showed up, especially if he showed up hung over Sneaking in all the equipment they used into the building without anyone noticing would be impossible. Giving the kids nicknames like "brace face" or "fancy pants" probably wouldn't go very well. Also breaking rules and "sticking it to the man" wouldn't be encouraged.

No, although I enjoy this movie, it is not a good example of how school systems work. Unless the lesson is how to inspire children to embrace themselves and that it's okay to stand out.
