In America, a 2015-2016 study (Poverty and Its Impact on Students’ Education, 2021b) found that 19% of minors were living in poverty during the school year. This study has also found out that a higher percentage of minorities went to a high-poverty high school than white students. Poverty in students can negatively impact these students by not being able to access the recourses needed. Students in poverty have many obstacles to face like malnutrition, and the inability to receive help for health issues. These factors play a huge role in how the child preforms in and out of school. For example, computers and phones may be easily accessed for some students but to families that are in poverty may not be able to afford such luxury for their child.

As a college student, I am being thrown into many career ideas and opportunities. A career I am considering is teaching and because of this, I feel as though it's extremely important for me, a possible future educator, to know about my students and what I can do to help them reach their full potential and to advise them the best I can.

To help students in poverty, you can start by donating school supplies. By donating school supplies, this allows students to get the resources they need in order to keep up with their school work. You can also be involved in a food bank to help the kids and families that have a small amount of food in their homes. Last but not least are clothing drives. By donating your old or even new clothes to students in need, you are helping them collect the items that are needed for them to attend a school while feeling comfortable.
