In my practicum we havent included any of them yet but at Aakuluk the fathers came for Father’s Day, they ate some cookies, watermelon and the drinks they provided were chocolate milk and juice boxes, that is probably the only time i have seen family/parents being invited into the daycare facility. But last year in my practicum at the Tundra Buddies i really liked that they had an elder and the elder would come and sing to the children in Inuktitut, and also teach them some Inuktitut words, some of the workers even learnt little bit of Inuktitut from the elder they had. I am hoping to see some more of either or before we finish ECE, as this is our second last practicum, i am hoping to even host or invite parents for an event in one of the occasions if it is possible or even help to plan how it will work.

And again, I have not experienced Elders or family members at my current practicum but during my practicum placement at Tundra Buddies Daycare, they had an Elder with lots of knowledge. You can use circle time as story telling or singing with an elder, you can do arts and crafts with an elder and educators working together, you can teach children to play string games or drum dance. There are so many different ways you can include Elders in childcare facilities. You can include family members by sharing skills, hosting an event for special occasions and what not, children will love having their families around at their daycares! You can invite firefighters to talk about their drills, give a tour of their trucks because children will always love having firefighters in their classroom.
