EMMA

Published anonymously in 1816, 'Emma' belongs to Jane Austen's so-called 'maturity' writings. The central theme of the novel is misunderstanding in love. Emma, the protagonist, who has remained absolute mistress of the house where she lives after her sister's marriage, finds herself managing the small world around her with a rather presumptuous goodwill. Welcoming a young girl, Henriette Smith, into the house, Emma tries to marry her off properly. Among possible suitors she chooses Elton, the village vicar, for her, inducing her to refuse the offer of Martin, a respectable local farmer, at the same time. But all plans are scuppered when it turns out that Elton, at heart a social climber, wanted to marry Emma instead. Among the many characters surrounding her, the only one able to tell Emma the truth, and point out her faults and weaknesses, is her friend Knightley, her neighbour and brother-in-law's older brother. In the end it is he who marries her, while Henriette marries the previously rejected young Martin. In this novel too, Jane Austen places the atmosphere, desires and experiences of the English gentry at the beginning of the 19th century at the centre of her narrative, succeeding in restoring their deepest smells and dynamics.
