Claudia Tate begins by a short, but quite precise summary of the plot and moves on to her thesis. She writes that “Passing” is not always interpreted well, as it’s not only a story about race but most importantly about  jealousy and intrigue. Tate describes Irene’s and Clare’s both appearance, character and their relationship. I’d like to use  this source because there are all information I need on how women are shown in the novella, so it will be easier to find them in this six pages essay rather than in two hundred pages book. Besides, Tate’s thesis is quite contrary to mine. The author describes Irene’s problems as emotional, rising from insecurities. I also noticed that but in my opinion these insecurities are based on many problems of racial identity, which will be the topic of my essay. Author describes their motifs, views and emotions that they were driven by. She considers what kind of impact sexuality, race and identity have on each character. She mentions the issue of crossing boundaries between two races and the Irene’s hypocrisy, when she criticized Clare for her passing (although she did it herself and continued to admire Clare). This is an excellent analysis of an image of a woman and her position in the society from perspective of feminism and race. This is exactly what I’m going to need for my essay. I already noticed a few interesting thoughts that I’d like to mention and without a doubt Judith Butler opened my eyes on a few of the issues I didn’t think of before and I think that mentioning them will be a very important part of my essay.

She wonders what was the place of women in such circumstances, what exactly was women’s position, and how and where could they evolve? This essay also takes on the issue of identity: racial, gender and sexual. Gillespie presents another interesting theory. She assumes that Irene’s fascination, jealousy and insecurity showed up because of Irene’s feelings for Clare. She might’ve desired Clare as she described her looks always as almost unreal. I want to use this essay because this is a theory I also thought of and wanted to mention in my essay. I think that while focusing on Irene and her problem with racial identity, it is necessary to mention that she might have fallen in love or at least desired Clare (maybe for reasons also tied to race?). I noticed that Nella Larsen created an erotic atmosphere between two women, yet still put them in conflict. This essay thoroughly explains this unclear motive. ]]> 2021-12-06 04:30:35 UTC https://padlet.com/magdalenat973/e820xdkf1818yp1f/wish/1930355707 TOWARD A NARRATOLOGY OF PASSING: Epistemology, Race, and Misrecognition in Nella Larsen's "Passing" Gabrielle McIntire magdalenat973 https://padlet.com/magdalenat973/e820xdkf1818yp1f/wish/1930356504 This essay in contrary to the other ones focuses more on the topic of race.  Gabrielle states that race is too complicated for someone to address exactly what kind of race he belongs to. She wants to know how does it happen that people who belong in community are binded together and are against people who are outside of it. Author also analyzes the novella from the point of the style that is was written with. Gabrielle mentions that this book keeps readers attention because of how well the plot is led and then it deprives us of pleasure of knowing how the story ends. We end the book feeling the exactly same feelings of tension that we felt while reading. I chose this essay as my source because I’d like to know more on the topic of race, since my essay will be about feminism in this book, but with a connection to the issue of race.  I also liked literary analysis of Larsen’s magnificent skills of writing.
