Fear is used to persuade the animals that the pigs need the milk and apples and if they don’t have them, their brains won’t function properly and Jones' will return. Used when the Pigs lead the animals into “beasts of England” they all start singing it once one starts. There was also a use of patriotism as the animals felt victory after the battle of Cowshed, declaring to fire the gun on that date each year and bestowing medals to brave fighters (pg 44). Napoleon was never really against the windmill. Squealer explains that it was a maneuver to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous influence. He says that this is called 'tactics', and although the animals don't understand the word, Squealer is so persuasive and the three dogs with him look so threatening(fear) that they accept the explanation. Fear is used again on pg 56, if the animals do not have discipline, Jones will return. There was also a use of name-calling as Squealer announced, “..Snowball, who as we now know, was no better than a criminal?”(pg 55) Created a common enemy and identified Snowball as a criminal. Squealer persuades the animals that their memories are at fault when they think they remember passing a resolution against money and trade at the first meeting after the Rebellion. He suggests that this is imaginary (pg. 57). Also, on page 55, Squealer says that Napoleon would be more than happy to let the animals make their own decisions if they would make the right ones, but they don't always do. Manipulation of language and gaslighting are used when the commandments are altered from “bed” to “bed with sheets”. Squealer convinces the animals anywhere can be a bed, and as the commandments continue changing, assures the animal's memories are at fault. Also uses fear, if the pigs don’t get good sleep Jones will come back (pg 67). There is also usage of scapegoating as Napoleon announces the windmill was destroyed by Snowball. Also shows the effort to make Snowball the common enemy (pg 70).

There was an attempt to elicit patriotism on the animals after the battle of Cowshed from Napoleon. The animals are all rewarded extra rations, and 2 full days of celebration. New decorations (medal), speeches, songs and firing of guns. The animals had barely won and were not feeling as celebratory and patriotic as Napoleon attempted to make them feel. Glittering Generalities is used on pg 112 when Squealer says that equal rations would be against animalism. This shows this technique, because to the animals Animalism is a new outlook on life that they are trying to achieve in the rebellion and new leadership. Animalism is positive (idea), as it refers to all animals equal and the commandments/principles. Animalism is interpreted differently among the pigs, then the rest of the farm. The pigs also use manipulation of language as they use all the animal's weaknesses against them, the fact that they're illiterate, hard-working, and willing to do anything to prevent Jone's return. They made the animals dependent on them.
