Being able to understand the needs of others allows leaders to increase job performance and have stronger relationships with their employees. Empathy can be improved by staying aware of burnout, showing interest in the needs, hopes, and dreams of employees, demonstrating a willingness to help an employee with personal problems, and showing compassion when other people share a personal loss. As a leader, showing empathy proves that you truly care about your employees and you want the best for them.

There are five elements of wellbeing: career, social, financial, physical, and community. Career wellbeing means you enjoy what you do everyday. To increase career wellbeing among employees, leaders can help employees discover their strengths, have zero tolerance for abusive managers, develop managers to be coaches, and include wellbeing in conversations about career development. Because wellbeing has several aspects, the more elements of wellbeing that an employee thrives in, the better it is. Wellbeing can be changed overtime by implementing practices to increase it. This connects to leadership practice by demonstrating the importance of wellbeing and how it can be seen in the workplace.

Do We Really Understand How to Lead with Empathy?

Stacey Lawson shares a personal moment that changed her life when she "quietly quit" and she had feelings she wasn't expressing. She was not being respected in her job and couldn't continue. She then goes on to speak about the Great Resignation that occurred after 2020 and how we need strong leaders to create workspaces where people want to work. We must place a greater importance on people impact in leadership and how leaders can enhance this. This can be done through trainings on emotional intelligence and similar strategies that allow leaders to gain a deeper understanding of their employees. We want leaders to create environments where people CHOOSE to be, and not HAVE to be.

Fostering Mental Health in the Workplace

Jessie starts off by addressing COVID-19 and the Great Resignation. The issues in wellness in the workplace come down to mental health. Jessie believes that emotional intelligence is critical to wellbeing in the workplace. Emotional intelligence can be fostered in the workplace by asking questions like "how can we improve the mental wellbeing of employees here?" In the past, emotional intelligence wasn't focused on in the workplace (IQ was), but it is slowly becoming more important, which will lead to an increase in social capability of workers in the future. In order to increase emotional intelligence, companies can implement programs that increase physical and mental health, such as mental health days and self care. These programs need to be included in the mission and culture of the business in order for them to be effective. These actions will overall benefit everyone by lowering turnover rate and increasing mental and physical wellbeing. When leaders foster an environment of wellbeing and self-care, employees feel more inclined and motivated to do great work and enjoy the work they are doing.

This infographic describes the importance of empathy and how it can be implemented in the workplace. Empathy builds trust within a team. It also boosts collaboration between team members and reduces conflict. Empathy supports mental wellbeing and encourages inclusion. Employees feel much better supported by their leaders and company when empathy is shown to them. And lastly, empathy enhances communication among team members, which is critical to success. In the workplace, empathy can be practiced through active listening, seeking to understand someone before forming judgments, showing compassion, being mindful of nonverbal cues, leading by example, and encouraging open dialogue. Empathy is learned and must be practiced, and leaders who are passionate about creating a healthy work environment will work towards creating an empathetic workspace.

This infographic lists the benefits of implementing wellness programs into the workplace. Wellness programs support mental health, which is just as important as physical health and can allow for employees to be more successful. Programs like this also build community and allow employees to create connections with each other and leaders. They also can enhance confidence, morale, and productivity which raises the satisfaction, success, and happiness of employees. Lastly, wellness programs boost recruiting and retention, because it decreases burnout and emphasizes the importance of self-care in the workplace. Implementing wellness programs demonstrates to employees that management truly cares about them and who they are as people, not just the work they do.

After this activity, I learned that empathy is not something everyone has or values, and it must be practiced in order to be implemented and effective. Fostering a work environment where there is a strong focus on empathy creates a space where employees feel cared for, which allows them to enjoy the work they do. Placing a focus on wellbeing ties into this greatly, and once again allows for employees to find greater satisfaction in their careers. Personally, I deeply value empathy and hope to continue to practice it in my leadership roles. I will occasionally neglect wellbeing, as I prefer to get my work done as quickly and efficiently as possible, but I will work to improve this and place more of an emphasis on it in the future.
