Post #1 (September 15, 2018) - Childhood Poverty and Development

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/15/opinion/children-poverty-cost.html

The United States has the weakest social safety net; therefore, president Trump and House Republicans canceled benefits from the program. It is believed that too much money is being spent on welfare programs and the benefit offers are too free handed that it should place stricter requirements. Due to having the weakest safety net, most Americans will live in higher poverty rates. This affects early childhood and the children grow up learning fewer skills and are less likely to contribute to economy. They also experience health care problems and likely to be involved in crimes. To make our economy better and reduce poverty rates, we should be supporting these programs instead of cutting ties.

The article brings to mind the topic of development, as it is defined as economic well-being. The United States is one of the riches in the world. Investing in childhood poverty and building effective support systems will help individuals contribute to economy and help prevent high poverty rates.

For the past three years now, Scotland has increased developing projects and has made over 116 projects.

This article is relevant because it conveys Scotland’s growth in FDI. Scotland has shown and held such support in FDI growth, which causes high competition on FDI projects but to maintain its leading position Scotland must continue to work hard in partnerships with private and public sectors. With their hard work, skills and continuous of FDI growth, they will continue to see their businesses and economy grow.

In 2019, deficit budget of 2.4% of GDP will benefit the lower class and will help to abolish poverty. But the Europeans Commission and markets find the proposal risky.
This article is relevant as its main focus is gross domestic product (GDP) and the percentage growth for the next three years will help reduce the debt crises and poverty rates Italy has dealt with. The new government sees debt to be reduced by increasing economic growth through an investment plan and funding will double in 2020.

Post #6 (November 2, 2018) - Budget 2018: 'Squeeze continues' for lower-income families

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46028792

Phillip Hammond, the chancellor of Exchequer, has increased public spending while also implementing £55 billion in tax cuts. Hammond’s implementations benefit the rich, however the tax cuts included the money that goes towards welfare which will negatively affects low income families. The difference in the range of income is drastic as the upper class is expected to earn an increase around £410 a year whereas lower class is expected to be earning around £30 a year.
This article made me think of socioeconomic status, upper class, middle class, working class and the poor. In this case, Italy has been on a tight budget as they have been dealing with debt crisis in the country. By setting these new policies, it may help decrease the rate of debt that they are struggling with but they are not taking into consideration that the poor are only getting more poor, low income families continue to struggle which causes higher poverty rates.

Post #7 (November 2, 2018) - The manufacturers fighting Trump's tariffs

This leaves manufacturing companies in the US worried, as it leaves the companies at stake. Many manufacturing companies believe that Trump has not thought about the long-term results thoroughly. Although, the Commerce Department believe this move will help release companies from the tariffs. About 55% of applications have been approved, but still leaving the majority of applications pending and leaving these businesses on the hang.
This article is relevant because it reminds me of the development project in which new ideas and policies are created to help the overall goal for economic growth. Although the outcomes of raising tariffs on steel and aluminum industries, this may call on crises and make it hard to trade and work with other countries.

Post #10 (November 26, 2018) - Italy budget: Rome vows to stick to plans, despite EU concerns

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46343033

The European Union and Italy’s government are not meeting eye-to-eye as Italy will move forward with their high-spending budget plan. Italy’s expensive budget includes a guaranteed monthly income for poor families and securing early retirement for the elderly. The EU is threatening to fine Italy because of their debt affecting the national debt. The EU is pressuring Italy to reduce their GDP to at least 2%, and the Italians are willing to negotiate just to avoid further conflict with the EU as they have planned a 2.2% GDP rather than the original plan of 2.4%.

After reading this article, it reminded me of GDP and our recent discussion on geography of globalization and global cities. When I think of global cities, I think connectivity, financial flows and exchange, and mobility to see development within the countries. GDP as it is one of the most important measures for development and based off the size of our economy. Majority of the economy is lower and middle class. Italy is trying all they can to get out of this debt crisis and see development because if there's no growth in GDP then issues on poverty and income inequalities on the lower income families and elderly will continue to grow.

Post #8 (November 24, 2018) - Black Friday shoppers 'spending less'

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46320551

UK shoppers have been buying more items on black Friday but are spending less. This is because the value on items decreased to 12% due to shoppers rather doing online shopping than in store. Shoppers are finding online bargain, which encourages them to continue to buy cheaper and smaller items rather than spending on more expensive items. In store buying has declined by 6.4%, sales traffic also dropped by 9.1% compared to last year. Each year the numbers keep dropping as many people find it more beneficial to find better discounts and shop online.

Retailers in the UK already find it risky to sell their products at a bargain price. Losing sales traffic and profits causes retailers to further expand their sales to drive more sales. This year, retailers have seen more sales drive, as shoppers are receiving the same promotions from a few months ago before the black Friday deals. This article is relevant as it talks about the financial spending in the UK to boost aggregate demand. As the UK is struggling with the decline in sales drive, retailers are promoting black Friday sales months before to attract more sales. They are thinking more of the short-term gain over longer-term gain and growth because by pushing more bargain sales on items, in the long run they are losing more money and profiting less.

The US is also competing for the title as well. Young workers go through photos and videos to label what they see. These factories are built in cheaper smaller cities where labor and wages are cheap and target former assembly lines workers who will be willing to work in these data factories. China believe this new way of assembly lines are their future of development. They believe they will grow to be a well-built economy of technology rather than manufacturing, as they are known to be with the assembly lines years ago.

This article brought up the topic of advanced technology and how developed countries and developing countries compare to one another. Many people may start to worry on the machinery and advanced technology advantages that countries have and will eventually take over jobs.
