Hair is not easy to find with the naked eye. It is very small and hard to see. It can also be anywhere, on the wall, even on things like lights and ceiling fans. Using other sources to find these small fibers make it so much easier. The first method is a magnifying glass. If you hold this at an oblique angle, it is easier to see these hairs. Another source is called oblique lighting. This is when you use a flashlight at an oblique angle to cast a shadow of the hair. This makes it easier to see where it is. Another method is called ultra violet lighting. This is a special kind of flashlight that casts almost like a black light that makes the hair fluorescent. This light casts about 100-400 nano meters of light. The last method is called an alternative light source. This is a special flashlight combined with special filtered goggles to create a different color that stands out of the fiber. This produces 400-800 nano meters of light. This makes it much stronger then the ultra violet lighting.

Once we find out evidence the first thing to do is document it, and photograph it. What I mean by documenting it is noting the position for the photograph. According to the conditions and things we can figure out if we need to hurry or if we can take our time. Since hair is pretty fragile evidence and can easily be lost, it will most likely be collected first in a crime. Once documented and photographed, we can collect the evidence. There is a lot of things that can go into time management and all of them need to be taken into consideration. Since hair is such fragile evidence and can easily be lost, it needs to be collected first.

The first step to collection is to bring the container to the evidence, this is so there is no ways of losing it. The main way to actually collect the evidence is on a post it note. Using the sticky side of a post it note, stick the hair. Write the collection information on the sticky note and fold it over to protect the evidence. This is going to be our inner layer packaging. Trace evidence should always be double packaged. This doesn’t mean you can put multiple pieces of trace evidence together in one envelope. This means that you can’t just put the hair in the envelope. You need to use something like a sticky note or a bindle and then put that in the envelope. This helps to keep the evidence safe so it doesn’t get lost or damaged. Also helps it so it can’t physically get out of the bag without purpose. Next, put our sticky note or bindle into the larger envelope. Before taping it and shipping it to the lab we need to fill out the paperwork for the evidence. The paper work of the crime scene and all that information needs to be filled out. The chain of custody also needs to be filled out. Once done with that then you can tape, initial, sign, date and send it off to the lab.

Personal Protective Equipment is an interesting subject here. The only real thing you need for this is of course gloves, and possibly goggles. You only need goggles if you are using an alternative light source. This is because not only is the light super strong, but the goggles are tinted, meaning they could help you see things.
