A different study by Eronen, Rantakokko and Rantanen (2014) aimed to identify the effect of enviromental facilitators for outdoor walking on development of walking difficulty in community dwelling older people.

This study was a prospective study with a 3.5 year follow up time on 261 people aged between 75-81 years old, who at baseline were able to walk 0.5k without difficulty.

Environmental facilitators for outdoor walking were self-reported with standardized questionnaires, with a number of different questions regarding accessibility to outdoors, parks, recreational areas, features in nearby areas.

Of the participants, 46 % developed walking difficulty during the follow-up. Having a park or other green area within a walking distance from home was the most frequently reported facilitator.

The results indicate that the mobility of older community-dwelling people may be promoted with outdoor recreational facilities that are easy to access and located within a walking distance from home.

Bulding a strong, entusiastic, group local people to participate in this walk will make this enjoyable. Getting out of the house for roughly an hour to meet up with friends and partake in the walk.

This will help all the partcipants get closer to meeting their recommended physical activity guidelines. This could be a start for some people but will hopefully lead them to a more physical, healthier lifestyle.

For mothers who want to get a break for an hour, or men who are looking to slowly build themselves up to eventually start running, it’s a great way to open up the lungs and get the blood flowing around the body.
