Handheld ultrasound devices with integrated artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming point-of-care imaging in emergency departments, primary care clinics, and rural health settings. Unlike traditional cart-based machines, these devices connect to smartphones or tablets, allowing clinicians to perform rapid cardiac, lung, abdominal, and vascular assessments at the bedside. Recent innovations within the past five years include AI-driven image optimization, automated quantification (e.g., bladder volume, B-line counts, and ejection fraction), and integrated cloud workflows for quality assurance and education (Narang et al., 2021; Topol, 2022). These features support providers by improving diagnostic consistency, reducing variability, and enhancing confidence among less experienced users. For low-resource environments, AI-assisted portable ultrasound represents a cost-effective and accessible tool to expand diagnostic capabilities and improve patient safety in both acute and clinical settings.

I believe AI-integrated portable ultrasound is one of the most impactful innovations in modern healthcare. In both the ER and family practice settings, it has the potential to speed up triage, reduce unnecessary transfers, and improve safety during bedside procedures. While cost and training remain challenges, the clinical value of expanding imaging access to low-resource settings strongly outweighs these limitations. This technology represents a step toward more equitable, efficient, and patient-centered care.
