The Progressive Era : Women's Rights by Sarah Gaci

During the Progressive Era one huge issue was that women didn't have the right to vote in the election. This made most women feel inferior and upset for not having a say in who their president would be. Another big problem was that women weren't allowed to have jobs or get an education, making it harder for families to make ends meet. Which is one reason why this topic is important.

During this time period there were people who fought for change and tried to gain more women's rights. For example Elizabeth Cady helped find the National Woman's Suffrage Association along with Susan Anthony. She also helped create N.A.W.S.A. . Another reformer was Lucy Stone, who organized the first National Woman's Rights Convention. These women worked hard to achieve these accomplishments and self sacrificed making another reason why this topic is crucial.

Women's suffrage and job opportunities injustices all got solved. They were fixed when Congress placed the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote. This completely solved the injustice of women not being able to vote. And as for education and job opportunities states agreed to give women education and allow them into schools as a solution. Some states did this faster than others such as Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming.

One comparison made between the problems back then and nowadays is that both time period issues involve women rights and injustices. I also noticed that the issue about jobs during the Progressive Era evolved into how much jobs make compared to men today.

One similarity I found is that there are still and have been, organizations today to help fix these problems just like back then. Also I noticed a major difference is that now Congress recognizes women's rights and supports them, but before they were against women's rights for the most part and rejected any ideas about giving them voting or educational rights.

One problem in the modern world is that there are unfair payments based on gender. Women don't get paid as many wages as men, even though they have the same jobs. This topic is important because women need to make enough for a living too and some can't, but if they got same wages as a man they could live comfortably.

Nowadays so attempt to fix the issue the House of Representatives try to pass acts that help fix unfair wages. A reformer today is the organization Equal Pay Today. To help this problem they set up Equal Pay Day, expose unfair wages, spread the word about unfair pay, and advocate for equal pay. This topic is important because this is biased and unethical.

Currently the government and certain organizations are attempting to get fair wages. Some ways they have done this is by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act. This act helped solve the problem because this made it illegal for businesses to have a huge pay gap between women and men. Another law that helped this issue was Title VII, because this law makes it illegal to discriminate based on gender, when it comes to pay and work benefits. As you can see this topic is important because women getting paid less is biased and makes their life harder.

One thing I noticed was that for these problems there are acts and laws put in place that solve the issue legally. I also noticed that now the government works more towards perfecting women's right, meanwhile back then they thought women shouldn't voting or work because it was manly.
