A New York City woman says burglars forced their way into her Queens home, tied her up and stole her jewelry and other expensive items. 

Police said the suspects made off with more than $1 million in valuables, including her wedding ring and Hermes and Chanel bags, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on March 19. 

All this happened while the woman's children were inside the multi-million dollar home in the Kew Gardens neighborhood. 

"I don't have peace of mind to even come out of my house," said the 36-year-old homeowner, who did not want to show her name or face. Some things that were said after the robbery were "My nanny went out to throw out the garbage, and then when she was coming back in, they followed her in". Moreover "At first, they locked me in a closet. And then I heard my daughter screaming, because they had her in another room. So I banged on the closet, they let me out and, thankfully, they let me be with her the entire time, in her room," she said.

If he follows through with that threat, it could have economic consequences for the U.S. lumber supply chain, to an associate professor of forest economics and policy at NC State.

Canada is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of softwood lumber. In 2023, the U.S. imported 28.1 million cubic meters of softwood lumber from Canada, primarily for residential and commercial construction.

Trump’s proposed tariff would require U.S. companies to pay a 25% tax to the U.S. government when importing Canadian softwood lumber products, with the goal of encouraging those companies to invest in domestic production instead.

U.S. companies would likely attempt to recoup tariff-related losses by raising the price of Canadian softwood lumber, which would potentially impact the housing market by making building materials more expensive.

“Tariffs unequivocally work towards pushing domestic lumber prices higher. When that happens, it usually adds up to higher costs for consumers,” Parajuli said.

When domestic lumber prices rise, U.S. companies benefit from increased profits as U.S. consumers have to pay more money for imported lumber, at least as long as demand for building materials and other lumber products remains steady.

Parajuli highlighted the 2006 U.S.–Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement as an example of how tariffs can impact the supply chain. The agreement essentially allowed Canadian provinces to charge an export tax on softwood lumber purchased by U.S. companies.

Under the agreement, which was active until 2015, U.S. lumber producers gained $1.6 billion and U.S. consumers lost $2.3 billion as softwood lumber imports from Canada declined by 78.8% in the months when export taxes took effect.

“U.S. consumers not only paid producers’ gains, but also the losses that resulted from the export taxes,” Parajuli said. 

Similar to the 2006 usa Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement, President Trump’s proposed tariff would likely lead to a slight decline in softwood lumber imports from Canada because of increased prices domestically.

I felt surprised since i have not heard that they have been affected with this earthquake and it was very unexpected

This has nothing to do with me and we never talked about earthquakes in history class yet but i do know another recent one that happened which i heard about in earth science classfor change in the world. What makes this article or cause so interesting or important, that the world should change because of it? What would you like to see personally be done?

What made this interesting was that i was not even aware that it had happen until reading this article i also did not know that the government of this country controls info so we cant get constant info about what is happening i dont think this is significant enough for the world to change and i would personally like to see the country make a full recovery and for people to start getting better.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had sued the New York doctor in December, accusing her of violating his state's ban by providing abortion pills to a resident.

When the doctor and her attorneys failed to appear, Paxton sought a civil penalty exceeding $100,000 and filed the judgement in New York state.

"I have refused this filing and will refuse any similar filings that may come to our office," said acting Ulster County Clerk Taylor Bruck.

New York's shield law protects abortion providers in the state from certain legal actions if they provide treatment or medication to women in states with abortion restrictions or bans.

On Thursday, Bruck cited this law in issuing his decision.

When the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, it allowed each state to pass its own laws and regulations.

Texas prohibits nearly all abortions with limited exceptions, whereas New York allows the procedure up until 24 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions if a patient's health or pregnancy is at risk.

The patchwork of access led some women in states with abortion bans or restrictions to turn to telemedicine to obtain medication used to end pregnancies from doctors in states where the pills are permitted.

The most commonly used form is a two-pill regimen of mifepristone and misoprostol. They can be used to end a pregnancy up to 12 weeks.

The doctor in this case, Margaret Daley Carpenter of New Paltz, New York, works with telemedicine organisations that provide abortion medications.

She is co-founder of the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine. The state of Louisiana brought criminal charges against Ms Carpenter for allegedly providing abortion pills to a resident there despite its restrictions.

Paxton sued Dr Carpenter for allegedly providing a 20-year-old woman in Texas the two medications that "resulted in a medication abortion."

The suit alleged that Dr Carpenter violated the state law by providing abortion pills to a Texas resident, and without having a license to practice medicine in the state.

It sought to prevent Dr Carpenter from providing abortion medication to Texas residents, and to impose civil penalties of no less than $100,000 for each alleged violation of Texas' abortion law.

"In this case, an out-of-state doctor violated the law and caused serious harm to this patient. This doctor prescribed abortion-inducing drugs - unauthorized, over telemedicine - causing her patient to end up in the hospital with serious complications," Paxton said in a statement announcing his lawsuit.

Paxton's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the New York clerk's decision.

"Since this decision is likely to result in further litigation, I must refrain from discussing specific details about the situation," Mr Bruck said.

The case signalled a new frontier in legal battles over abortion in the US, as states like Texas seek to limit their residents' ability to get abortion pills from out-of-state providers.

States often cooperate on law enforcement matters, including criminal investigations and extraditions.

But after the US Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade, eight Democratic-led states, including New York passed shield laws to protect abortion providers using telehealth to see patients in states with abortion restrictions or bans.

A total of 22 states and the District of Columbia have shield laws in place for their medical providers.

"I commend the Ulster County Clerk for doing what is right," New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

"New York's shield law was created to protect patients and providers from out-of-state anti-choice attacks, and we will not allow anyone to undermine health care providers' ability to deliver necessary care to their patients."

However, only half of those affected receive treatment, often because of the stigma attached to mental health. Untreated, mental illness can contribute to higher medical expenses, poorer performance at school and work, fewer employment opportunities and increased risk of suicide.
