Pak Syahril Dahlan

Pak Syahril was a drug addict when he was younger. He got exposed to drugs early when he was in middle school. It got really bad to the point where he needs to go to rehab. Back in the day, Indonesia didn't have many rehab options, so he went to Malaysia to get treatment there. His recovery journey in Rehab inspired him to build his own. In 1999 his sister (Dr. Reza) and he founded their Rehab called "Yayasan Rekan Sebaya". To this day, Pak Syahril continues helping people recover from their addiction using a family treatment approach. This is one of the earliest rehab centers in Indonesia. Pak Syahril and Dr. Reza believed that drug addicts deserve to have a community that will accept them while also guiding them to a better lifestyle. In Yayasan Rekan Sebaya, they see each other as family. Therefore, the people there felt loved and cared for. The other important aspect to guide them is to spiritually enrich them by building the discipline to pray 5 times a day, and also have time to read the Quran together as a community. Pak Syahril believed that to build a healthier lifestyle, they need a healthier mind. This spiritual approach also gives them more reason to be grateful for their life.
Pak Reinhard and Ibu Bhernadethe

Pak Reinhard and Ibu Bhernadethe met at a youth support group community in their church. Ibu Bhernadethe got exposed to drugs when she was only 12 years old. When she entered middle school, she met with a group of friends who introduced her to the addictive lifestyle. Thankfully, there was someone who faithfully guided her to understand the danger of the lifestyle and gave her a deeper understanding of her faith to God. In her recovery process, Ibu Bhernadethe mentioned how painful it was to watch her friends and family members still choosing to consume the substance. There was a time when she even saw them getting overdosed. This led her to make her own support group to help drug addicts get healed by growing a deeper relationship with God.

While Pak Reinhard got exposed to the substance when he was 14 because he wanted to be accepted by his friends at that time. Trying to be a cool kid, he agreed to consume the substance and even became an addict himself. He finally decided to go to rehab after 15 years of becoming an addict. After getting treatment in the rehab, he then went to the youth support community that Ibu Bhernadethe joined. Having the same experience brought them together to make a difference.

As the support grows, they get an opportunity to not only support the addict spiritually but also give them treatment. They then got a chance to make their first Rehab in Bogor. With the support from the church, this community keeps growing. They then got another opportunity to take care of a rehab owned by a church in Bandung. After some years, they finally made their own rehab that we called “Yayasan Genrasi Jabez”.

The two of them has not only helped others to heal but also inspired others to participate in helping those who are recovering from drugs addiction.

We also interviewed a boy from Genrasi Jabez, who is healing from an addictive lifestyle. He is currently receiving treatment there and is building a new lifestyle. He got exposed to drug use when he was 10 because he wanted to be cool. But that has made him lose a lot of opportunities in his studies. Because his cognitive ability is decreasing and he didn't perform well in his study, he has also become more shy, and what's worse is that he has become more dependent on the substance for his happiness. His recovery journey is just a start to a brighter future. It's never too late to recover ✨✨
