Article Link: https://www.si.edu/stories/what-if-you-could-hear-space
A sentence that the article worded in active voice was the first sentence which reads as follows: “A new project turns astronomical images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory—operated for NASA by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory—and other telescopes into sound.” While it does have a passive voice sentence inserted into the center of it, it is still active voice. The author probably chose to use active voice so that the beginning would be strong and that this “new project” is making lots of progress. One of the last sentences is passive voice. It states, “In this piece, the X-rays (visualized as blue and white) are played by brass instruments, optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope (purple) by strings, and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (pink) by the woodwinds.” The author chose passive voice because it helps the flow since they needed to add a list of what different things represented.

While this sentence is active voice there are some passive voice sentences. For example, “Wong’s achievements were recognized by the industry with her induction to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, a year before her death.” I believe the author used passive voice in this sentence to create some objectivity. While it’s great that Hollywood recognized her achievements it wasn’t until 40 plus years after she started acting. She was a groundbreaking actress, however since she was Chinese, she was stuck getting typecasted time and time again.

An example of passive voice is found in the first sentence of the first paragraph where it says, “When you see stunning images of space, they’re often visual representations of data captured by telescopes, with different colors for different elements or types of energy.” I think the article used passive voice because they didn’t want to make the depiction of space through colors emphasized. This is because the topic of the article is their new method and how they plan to depict space with sounds and not sight. If this is their plan then they would want the old way they did things to have less emphasis which is something that passive voice can do. Here is an example of where they used active voice, “The sonification team worked with scientists and students who are blind or have low vision to share this information in a new digital way.” Here they used active voice because this sentence is talking about the opposite frame the passive voice sentence. This sentence puts emphasis on the sonification team showing that they were the ones who did the work and giving them the credit that they deserve. They were the ones who worked with the blind or low vision civilians so that so that they could figure out how to best depict space with sounds.

One thing you could use is a mountain. This can symbolize a challenge in a characters life or a big obstacle they have to climb. However, this could also show achievement and accomplishment in a characters life the was a very momentous moment in the story.

Another thing you could use is an airplane. This can be used to show a big move or change in direction in a characters life but I think this could also be to represent that a character is maybe thinking but not saying out loud. Airplanes are in the air and that could symbolize the thought being up in their head. Also, it could show that someone is spaced out or not in the moment right then and there. They aren’t “on the ground” during that moment.

One final thing you could use is a ladder. Ladder can be used to represent a connection between points in a characters life. However, they can also be used to represents someone’s steps toward a goal and getting up that ladder to a goal of theirs. Although it’s not a flower or plant, I think ladders can also symbolize growth. Ladders take steps, big, upward, steps to climb up and I think life can be like that. It takes big steps of growth to get to your goal or achievement or physical height or mental area. It takes work and effort just like it takes to climb up a ladder.

Blackberry: The blackberry, though it is just a fruit can symbolize a multitude of things, based on color, shape, size, and more. Blackberries have a lot of little sections, but they still work together to make a delicious, and healthy food. So, it can represent strength in numbers. It also shows that something doesn’t have to be big to back a punch. Also, all the little sections could symbolize wealth. I know that grapes symbolized wealth back in medieval times. There are lots of sections in a blackberry and each very delicate. Delicate things are often thought to be wealthy. But even though blackberries are delicious, they come at a cost. They grow on thorn bushes. This shows that good things are often hard to get. For example, if you want to be rich, you have to work for it.
Because of the thorns blackberries can symbolize danger, and even love, because rose have thorns on them too.

Cell phone:
Cell phones are very important, but also very addictive and restrictive. This can be a confusing relationship, because it is hard to imagine something being good and bad at the same time. I thing cell phones show confusion and containment. It can be confusing to know the limit, and know if it it is or isn’t a good time to be on your cell phone, and people are often drawn, and contained in a life within their phones. So phones don’t give much freedom. But in a sense they do, because we can text friends. So that adds on to the confusion. But I think that ultimately phones are very beneficial if they aren’t taking over a persons life.

Snake:

Snakes are arguably the most symbolic animal ever. They mostly symbolize danger, deceit, and trickery. They are dangerous because they are known to be poisonous. They are deceptive because they blend in so well and could look quite harmless. But they lull their prey into traps. In fact, in countless stories, including the Christian Bible, snakes have been know to trick their target into doing something harmful.

People have and can find whales in rivers, so it is kind of like the reader had to make an inference of who the text is referring to. Whales are not found by a specific group of people, or a specific animal, so it was unnecessary to say, for example, “Anyone, animal, or living organism can find whales even in freshwater streams.” While this still works, it is completely useless. So, ultimately, the author thought passive voice was the easiest and most reasonable for this scenario.

The electrifying Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans tells a tale of gripping action and a romantic love story (but mostly action) that would appeal to anyone in their teenage years and beyond. This shocking series does a great job of building suspense. Every book provides an unpredictable plot line with plenty of surprises along the way. Though some might read this book and remember a story of good against evil, it is also very emotional, as readers can witness a love story and watch the feeling of loss unfold. The main character Vey is a very inspirational figure, spurring emotion with quotes such as “One need not fight every battle, or die in the struggle, to be a hero”.

There are an uncountable number of ways people choose to live life, but the real purpose of life is to prepare for the next. Some would say that we are here to enjoy life to the fullest and do whatever we want—hence the slang term “YOLO”—but the Bible says otherwise. It repeatedly reports things such as “the night is coming when no man can work”. Life can be very short, and God has given each of us a certain amount of time to prepare for when it is over. And why should we not prepare? God himself made us, so we are not our own. He owns us and our lives because we were bought with the blood of his son. Plus, if we are not prepared, we will be exiled to the place where the “worm dieth not”. A place where we are alone, without hope. So, when contemplating choices in life, it is vital to remember the reason we were put on earth—to prepare for the afterlife.

The meaning of life is to find happiness. Humans have an innate desire to find happiness. That is why Aristotle once said, “Happiness is not defined by an emotion, but by a long term pattern of actions.” While that might sound super cheesy it’s actually very true. Can you feel happiness as an emotion, yes. But what can truly allow us to experience happiness is a long term build of all of our actions. This is why it’s so important to explore our true passions in life. It’s because the true meaning of life is to find happiness in yourself and the world around you.

The leaf often represents new beginnings and change. New beginnings can be beautiful, just like the leaves when they change color in the fall. Mice can represent having fear in something that is hardly there. Often times in media when people see mice they are afraid. And while I wouldn’t want to be around mice all the time there is really no reason to yell and scream at such a tiny, harmless creature. Finally, I believe the bench represents a rest. If you are on a long walk and you see a bench most people would take the opportunity to sit down and rest. In avengers endgame, after Steve has lived his life with his true love, he sits down on a bench, knowing that after a life of war he can finally rest.

Persevere, for there is always an end to the woods. The poem says, “You continued swimming through, the icy waters ever slow.” This shows that even if you’re going through something as horrible as “swimming through icy water” you can keep moving forward. Secondly, the poem also says, “they would pull you down under, if you did not swim.” This also proves the first point about how you have to keep going. If you do not keep “swimming” or moving forward then you will be pulled under. If you let others stand in your way then you won’t be able to live you life how you want. You will be living it as other want you to. That is why is have to persevere, because there might be obstacles, but you can keep fighting and make it out of the woods.

“The Distracted Teenage Brain” was about a study done on teenagers and adults. It showed that teens tended to do the same thing that once gave them a payoff even after the reward was ended. That in turn slowed them down from accomplishing the true goal faster because of that past reward. This is related to teen texting and driving because they unconsciously want to have the “reward” of talking to someone. Which in turn, makes them distracted and causes them to crash.

For the tests, my goal to achieve a good score is to not let myself get frustrated with the questions and work. I’ll need to remember that it’s okay to have to take the time to reread text again so I can be sure of my answer and gain new ideas and perspectives on the questions. Sometimes the difficulties of a test are not always that it is hard, but that I don’t have the motivated mindset I’ll need. I plan to give myself breaks, but not be lazy throughout the whole thing, so I can get a preferable score and be proud of it.

Anxiety and fear part of being stressed, and are similar but have some differences. Anxiety affects less people, where it is an emotion that occurs before an event, unlike fear. Various methods can be used to lessen these intense feelings. Although it may seem bad, a study showed that people that stressed and felt anxious often were typically more intelligent, where they would study harder for tests and ask more questions. Therefore, the stress pushed them to do better.

The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that helps with making plans and decisions. Teenagers are attracted to rewards and do things where they know they are going to get a reward at. Distracting things such as texting and social media help cause the brain's reward system. Some ways that can help you not get distracted is removing the distractions as much as possible which will make it easier to concentrate on things.

“Keeping Up with the Jonses” is a phrase usually meant to describe the battle for becoming as successful and famous as your neighbors. The name is thought to have come from a rich Jones family in New York 1853, who had built large mansions and hosted private parties. Climbing the social status in America meant accumulating wealth, which was not identical to fame depicters in the UK, which was mostly based around royalty. “Keeping up with the Jonses” influenced lower-income families to work harder to become greater.

The experiment in “Fear Prompts Teens to Act Impulsively” introduces the idea that the orbital frontal cortex in teens does not always act fast enough in the face of fear and violence before the teen relies on their emotions to take action. The threatening face on the computer screen causes them to feel fear and act in any way to change the situation. Experiencing behavior like this at a young age can get the brain used to unwanted moods and reactions.

The women behind the movie Hidden Figures were real people who accomplished many amazing things in science and mathematics. They also helped fight for gender and racial equality. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson all excelled at their jobs in the math and science fields, but they wanted to push through the limits that were created for them. These women accomplished things that nobody had done before. They showed people that they could be incredibly talented mathematicians, leaders, and engineers.
